    1999 Protege 1.6... GETTING 14 MPG

    Yes, that's right!!!

    It's a 1.6 liter Automatic.

I bought the car out from my parents about 6 months ago. They got it from a dealership, with 73,xxx miles on it a year ago, and had to take it in 4 times in three months for that EGR problem that the '99 Protege's are famous for. I got it with about 76k miles on it, and it now has 93.5k miles. It's my daily driver, and I have a long commute to work everyday and a girlfriend that lives 45 minutes away, so I put mileage on it. The check engine light came back on right after I got it, and I've been ignoring it. It hasn't effected the cars performance at all, in anyway. It was still slow, and it got what seemed like reasonable mileage.

The check engine light came on and off for awhile, most of the time it went off with a full tank of gas, but it's been on for two months straight now. I've been getting TERRIBLE gas mileage lately. 90% of my driving is highway mileage, and I'm averaging 14.5 mpg. I'm not hard on it, but it is really underpowered, so it normally winds out to 3.5 to 4,000 rpms on acceleration before it shifts. I am spending upwards of $80 a week to keep gas in this car, and that is ridiculous, I used to daily drive a '92 Camaro with a 5.0 V8 that I beat the hell out of and it got 20-25 mpg.

The tires are all brand new, along with the sway bar end links, all new brakes, etc, etc. Just spent $1,000 on this thing replacing parts. The tranny was slipping the third gear shift, but with some Lucas Anti Slip, it doesn't do it anymore. I'm getting tired of replacing things on this car.

I haven't done anything with the plugs, wires, air filter, they seemed okay. I usually go about 4 to 5,000 miles between oil changes, because I put a lot of mileage on it, and it's annoying changing the oil every few weeks.

Any recommendations? I don't think the EGR problem could really be the culprit behind the gas mileage, as it never did anything to it before, but I removed all the emissions equipment on the '92 Camaro and it ran perfect. What is going on?! This car is costing me an arm and a leg. I put $30 in it Monday afternoon, and 160 miles later... its BONE DRY.

The mileage got REALLY bad when it started getting really cold.

The car drives normally, it isn't hesitant, starts right up every time, and performs like a crappy 1.6 lol. Exhaust doesn't smell or look like it's running rich... what's happening?!

If your malfunction indicator light has been steadily on for two months now, you ought to get it read to find out if the problem causing it is related to your poor fuel mileage.

    Happy Motoring!

could be as simple as a bad 02 sensor

wasting all that money when the code could lead to a cheap fix is silly... get a scanner or take your car to a local auto parts store, pull the code, and post it up.

Leaky injector could be the culprit especially since it got worse with the temperature drop, but thats a shot in the dark without knowing what the code is.
The T3 BP MX-3 conversion has begun, and is taking forever & will kill me.

does your Protege hesitate when you push on the gas?

It threw an exhaust code, but the mileage has improved and since it's been warmer, the check engine light has been on and off. I think it's the catalytic converter, and it sounds like it may have a very small exhaust leak at the manifold. It doesn't hesitate, it drives very well and normal. The trans acts up from time to time, but it has been for 30k miles so I don't worry too much about it.
