Does it really improve performance? I was thinking of putting turbo on my protege but it if it's too much then I'll just get a cold air intake. Does anyone know if the 1.6 liter engines can handle turbo at decent PSI? Idk if I said that right haha. Anyway if anyone can respond it would be great.

Cold Air Intake?

Look through the "Engine and Drivetrain" section of the BJ forums, goldtstar should have a sticky on how to modify the stock intake for better performance. Honestly a cold air intake won't do much better than how he modified his stock system. Plus, I think the modifications are free, just a few minutes of your time. I'd post a link, but I'm on my phone. I'm sure goldstar will chime in at some point.
Edit: I'm on my computer now, so here's the link: http://www.wihandyman.com/forum/show...-Intake-System
Read up and enjoy some free modifications.Last edited by irishkev90; 11-16-2012, 07:29 AM.

dont bother with a cold air intake .. it's purely cosmetic. same with expensive vs cheap cone filters. there is no performance difference between them. save your money for rims and tires, suspension upgrades, normal maint. you wont see much power ever out of the FS 1.6. it's not the same motor as the bp 1.6 you see turbo'ed. with very little expense ( comparative) your car will handle like it's on rails and you can use that to your advantage running auto-x. It's never going to be a drag strip racing star untill you are ready to spend about 5k or more on a built motor with boost.
dont get me wrong i'm not dashing your dreams here ... just being realistic.

What they said. Also... Search noob. Which means... Don't start a million new threads asking one question at a time, all of which can be easily answered, just search and then read up. Just read for a while. Slow down, your car is not going anywhere. I know you have the desire to impress your peers, and you think that a ton of small things done to it will do just that... But chill dude. Seriously, just save some cash. Big upgrades are way more baller, than $25 here... $19 there modifications.
Forget turbocharging, you will want a second car for when you blow the motor...
Instead, research things like a KL swap, or a BP swap. And before you go adding decent power... Add some handling and braking... Otherwise that car ain't going to survive a leadfoot like you.Current:

Thanks for providing the reference, Kev. The mod I described does make a difference you can feel with the 2.0 L engine. I've not had any personal experience with utilizing the mod on the 1.6 L engine although others who've done it claim a benefit and, in theory, it should have a positive effect on power output and provide a small but noticeable increase just as in the case of the 2.0 L. For what it's worth, my mod costs no money so you have nothing to lose.
In addition to the provided reference, for a more detailed explanation of why this mod works, check out:
In terms of turboing your car, check out the threads posted by THEGOLDPRO on our Forum. He had a 1.6 L like yours that he turboed and turned into a real performer. He did excellent work and I can attest to that as I knew his car and rode in it on several occasions. You'll get much information by viewing his threads.
