Hi all,
I'll be tearing into a friend's 1999 1.6L Protege soon, and wanted to verify the transmission model is FN4A-EL? She doesn't have much money, so I can't just throw parts at the car. The car is getting a p0771 - shift E solenoid stuck off, and the transmission light flashes. Shifting appears to be normal at lower speeds, but revs go to 3,500 on the freeway, as if it isn't going into OD or TC lockup. She's getting something like 23 MPG, which is crazy low for such a small car.
So, I'm thinking I need to have a shift E solenoid (pwm) handy when I drop the tranny pan. The new part is $130, but I see this auction for a refurb for $31 shipped. Seems cheap enough to try out, but I'd hate to drop the pan and find out it's the wrong part.
I've seen reference to the 1999 Protege having a 1.6L, 1.8L and 2L engine, so I just wanted to double check that the 1.6L has the FN4A-EL transmission.
Anything else I should be aware of before tearing into this?
