the onlt tire i know of that will fit for sure with an aftermarket rim is the 205/40/17. check the protege faq website http://www.protegefaq.net/ and under the model info section check the topic "What stock wheel and tire combinations have been available on the Protegé?" that'll tell you all the stock wheel and tire combos for your year. if its a 3rd gen it should have listings for Wheel size and the tire combo's for everything from the puny 14's up to the msp's 17's
What good is money if it can't inspire terror in your fellow man?
hey ace777...check out this site... http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html . It's a tire calculator and will give you the equivalent tire size when you punch in your stock size. I used this to find winters for mine last year because I went from the stock 16" to 15" rims for the winters. Just make sure your new tires and rims that you choose don't go over the outside line on the diagram.
I'm running stock 195/50/16's on my 2001 ES2.0. The equivalent size would be 205/40/17. I still have room because I haven't lowered my ride yet, so if you want you could still go bigger than this.
