    Current engine in the bug is the stock 1600. Does ok, but when it's replacement time I'm gonna have to add power for sure.

      mine was intact after 130 000 Miles , what broke was tensioner spring ,costs 2 bucks, easy job to replace,what u should look is when u set timing take a picture with ur phone in line with camshaft pulleys so u can judge easy,

        in the 2003 manual it says inspect at 60,000mi replace 105,000mi. i replaced mine at 90,000mi to be safe. recommend idler, tensioner, water pump, spring, and camshaft, crankshaft seals. new accessory and alternator belts, valve cover gaskets, valve cover bolt grommets, are optional but you'll be taking those off anyway. you'll find most of those in those online kits.
