    HVAC control problem

The fan control on my 2003 LX has quit working. It's completely off on 0, 1, 2, and 3, but it works if it's on 4. The weird thing, though, is that if I have the A/C on, it works if I have the fan set at 1, 2, or 3, but if I turn the fan to 4, which is the only setting on which the fan works, the A/C shuts off. So...what ends up happening is that I get cold air that barely comes out of the vents, or I get warm air (whatever the temp is outside) blown at me at full blast. Anyone know what I need to do to fix this? I don't want to take it to a dealer to have it fixed. Do I just need to replace the HVAC controls?

I went ahead and replaced the temperature controls, and it still doesn't work. I think I read something somewhere about some sort of electrical relay that might need to be replaced? Does anyone know where this thing is located in the car?

          Hey breiland

I had to fix this as well right after I bought my Mazdaspeed Protege.

It goes by the names of Blower Motor Relay, Blow Motor Fuse, Heater Motor Relay, etc.

Its about 36 bucks from a Mazda dealership. I had no luck finding it at any parts store. Took about a week to come in as well.

The part is located behind the glovebox in the 03.5 MSP, I would assume its in the same place on the 03 LX.

I will have a picture of it available for you tonite, tomorrow late afternoon at the latest. I can 99% gaurantee this is what needs to be fixed right now for you, as the exact same thing happened with me.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I actually finally did find the part, after searching the web for about 6 hours on Saturday. I got it fixed on Monday.

Hi all, This has just happened to my '02 Protege too, right out the blue. If anyone can give any details as to where to find this relay I would much appreciate it.

This post might be a good thing to bear in mind for other Mazda owners considering a new fan switch is 36 bucks and a new control box is 224 bucks......

                Any help would be appreciated.

                Thanks.

                Chris.

Pull out the glove compartment. (Open it, squeeze the sides, and pull it the rest of the way out.)
Behind the glove compartment, you'll see a white plug. Unplug it, and undo the two screws holding the voltage resistor (I think that's what it's called.) in place. It'll be a black plastic piece with a red plate-looking-thing sticking out of it. This is what you need to replace. I got mine from my Mazda dealership's parts department for around $35 including tax. You don't need to replace the fan switch or the control box. Let me know if you have any other questions.
