couple misc. questions on engine mods

new owner of a 2002 mazda protege lx. its 5 spd with 106xxx miles on it. first of all i love this car. couldnt be happier with it except the fact its way too slow. previously to purchasing this car i owned two BPT powered BGs.

first of all i would like to see if a anyone can post some links or explain some things to me.

    1. what does it take to v6 (KL) these chassis?

2, do people commonly boost the stock 2.0? what can it hold up too and what not.

    3. where the hell should i start with this car!? its mint and want to make it something more enjoyable.

    thanks

    1. That's a Google search away.

    2. Yes, all the time. Mazda even strapped a turbo to it from the factory, a la the Mazdaspeed Protege. Also a Google search away.

    3. Do some research and pick whatever you like. It's your canvas. Though, I will share some good advice. Stop it, give it good tyres, drop it, then make it go fast.

The BJ chassis is a great platform. I used to love my old Protege5. The only thing I didn't love was the FS-DE that powered it.

If you do decide to boost the 2.0 I would deff recommend building it first. It's very weak from the factory.

To begin with, there's much information about modding your car on this forum. In answer to your specific questions:
          1. I don't know - never did it.

          2. Since the factory boosted your engine you can, too. As long as you keep the boost within MSP limits (around 7 PSI gauge), it's not necessary to strengthen engine internals. You'll need to add an intercooler which the factory did by using a smaller coolant radiator to make room for a FMIC. Apart from the addition of an oil cooler, one heat range colder extended tip platinum-tipped plugs, and of course the PCM, there were no other differences between the normally aspirated and the turbo engine.

The transmission was equipped with a LSD and 2 mm dia. larger axles. The wheel/tires were changed to 17 x 7" rims and 215/45 tires.

A totally upgraded suspension system was also installed.

          The turbo engine developed 170 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 160 lbs/ft torque @ 3,500 rpm.

All these parts and assemblies are available from various sources if you want to go this route.

          3. It's always a good idea to start with an improved intake and exhaust system, switch to a true synthetic engine and transmission oil if you're not already so equipped, replace the plugs with iridium/platinum types, and replace the two high tension wires with either Magnecor or better than OEM NGK types (or at least measure their resistance to ensure they're within factory specs). Information for carrying out all of these proceedures is available on our forum.

          Happy Motoring!

A KL swap is very easy. Making it emissions legal is not.

a BJ is basically a 2nd gen probe... You will need a 2g probe/mx6/626 donor car....

For a BG u need an mx3 parts car.. for BJ u need a probe or mx6

I had no problems using an mx3 parts car. Why would you need an mx6 or probe?
