    99 1.6l ecu tuning options

Hey guys, looking to get the most out of my car na. Plan on doing all na mods within reason and heavy suspension mods. i know na isnt the best bang for the buck but im about to pick up a 2.3 turbo 87 ranger from a buddy and want to keep my dd na. Looking to do header, intake, exhaust, ud pulleys if possible and maybe a port and polish. but to get the most out of it all id like to get it tuned. can the stock ecu be chipped or am i gonna have to go piggy back/stand alone? If pb or stand alone whats the best option. i really like megasquirt and my buddy is very familiar with tuning high hp turbo cars on it but is there something cheaper thats better for what i need? any help will be greatly appreciated and feel free to move the thread if it shouldnt be here.

Unfortunately, you won't get much of an increase in power from a 1.6 L normally aspirated ZM-DE engine. Intake and exhaust mods will do little to increase the power appreciably and trying to re-chip the engine will be a waste of time and money. After all, the stock engine only has 105 BHP @ 5,500 rpm and 107 lbs/ft torque at 4,000 rpm. The only practical way to get any real power from this engine is to turbo it. Spend your money on suspension mods as they at least will make the car more fun to drive.

    Happy Motoring!

Suspension work is getting done regardless of engine mods but being an auto the car is extra sluggish. the zm is essentially the same as the b6 i had in my miata and while na mods didnt do a ton it was still noticible. i just want a little more pep because at the moment it doesnt pull much in the middle between cruising and wot and downshifting. i drive on lots of hilly and curvy roads and sometimes it struggles in 3rd and 4th even with ~50k on a rebuild. exhaust/header and probably intake will be custom fabbed for the cost of materials (step dad is a hell of a fabricator) given i can find or have made the flanges needed. Cost should be a fraction of what id pay for aftermarket parts.
