            Diff Bearing preload

I found some tools on ebay for finding out what shim is needed after pressing on a new diff bearing. The bearings need a certain amount of force on them to ensure long life. The spec is defined as the amount of force required to begin rotating the diff.

These tools allow the trans to be open by using spacers (top left pic) and one shim selection gauge (top right pic). The procedure is on the ford cd.

Another way of preloading the bearings is outlined in the writeup below. It seems like it would work fine but be more tedious.

For a good writeup on the a simular lsd install-

This article also outlines some ways of making the shims.

At last someone is going to do it properly.....just out of general interest how much did you pay for the tools...

I am thinking of buying one of the SST's from Mazda, or making one up.
Long bolts and spacers are the easy part.

I know jesiotrot mentioned that he was having a problem getting axles out of his guru LSD box...but seriously I dont think I have ever had this problem of getting the left hand axle out....on any car I have owned..I use a pry bar about 2ft long

If anything, its been the other way, I have had axles pop out, because the wire clip has become a bit worn from being re used too many times.

so fedex destroyed my harbor freight press, which i had ordered online since the local store didnt have any at all. they gave me an RGA to get credit for the thing, hopefully that goes smoothly.

i decided to call up the local store... they now have ONE press in stock... a better and more expensive model than the one i had ordered online. Ferdi found a 20% off coupon... so with that i'm only spending an extra 10 bucks and i'm getting a much better press :D

planning on picking it up tomorrow. they said they would hold it for me (put my name on it and everything)

here is what i'm getting (20 ton)

here is what i am returning (which i just noticed is now $119 online, it was $149 when i ordered it the other day!!)

word, $160 isnt bad IMO and i can drive a half hour and pick it up instead of waiting a week just for it to end up damaged lol.

The $119 is a discount price for the broken press, lol!

The kit with all the spacers (and the wrong shim selection tool) 30 bucks
The kit with the G trans shim selection tool 75 bucks. He wanted 100 but he accepted best offer basically making it a free ship. I can measure the parts for the shim selection tool and spacers. It seems easy to make. There are several selection tools for the different diameter bearings. Some are adjustable but I thought the one we need is fixed. One used a feeler gauge on it to find the shim.
