GI: YCW Reference Series Coilovers

Did some internet digging, would the MOOG replacement spring specifications help? This data was pulled for a 1994 Protege 1.8 DOHC, Manual Trans, with Air Conditioning. (They also list it as fitting the BG chassis escort - MX3 must be different enough in weight to warrant different p/n's.)

With this data the ratio front to rear is 1:0.724.

This means the Ground Control coilover sleeve sets are a little soft in the rear at 300F/200R, ratio of 1:0.667

Anyone know what the stock springs are on K-Sports, just for another point of reference?

If the springs we'll be using here are in Kg/mm i would suggest either 5.5F/4.0R or 5.0F/3.5R.

K-Sport rates are 420/224.

GC rates are too light for the rear of a wagon, the 224 KSport is much better but ideally I think something closer to 250 is right.

MX3 springs in the rear of the wagon made it sag in the back unloaded.

So the Ksport ratio is even softer in the back compared to everything else, ratio of 0.509 ... interesting.

If you think a 250 rate would be best for the rear of a wagon, do you think it would be the best for the rear of a sedan/hatch too? I'm not sure we should set the standard spring rate based on one model being heavier in the back... design it to work best for the largest group of buyers, exceptions can customize. Just my $.02... no offense to wagons i drive one every day.

If we did go 251/4.5 in the back, we could pair that with a 6.0/335up front and have a ratio of 0.75 or a 6.5/363 and be at 0.692. I'm just afraid that a front spring that stiff would mean a pretty rough ride.

Unfortunately my only real world "coilover" experience (in these cars) is GC 300/200 sleeves on ZX2 struts which are pretty damn harsh due to the not-so-great dampers.

I can tell you right now that with a good damper, you wont feel the springs. I have K-Sport springs on my car now with the Koni inserts I retro fitted and it rides better than stock and better than stock struts with GC sleeves.

Yes I always felt the 224 K Sport was too soft even for a hatchback in the rear. Lets see what they come up with and I will report the rates that were selected for my new coilovers as soon as I receive them.

That Ksport/Koni setup is tempting, however i really want to support MFactory in this new venture. I have time to spare so I think I'm going to stick with the YCW's

I support this effort by MFactory as well and was just giving an example. You wouldn't be able to duplicate what I did anyway since the Koni inserts are long discontinued, and it's inside some older KSport shock bodies which are also no longer available.
