    The exception here is 25 years instead of 15 years... I've researched this. :-)

    edit: If Mazda provided some certification that the car would meet crash standards here, it may be possible, but I doubt they would. Otherwise independent crash testing has to be done.

        Yes, the crash & emissions standards are mandated on a federal level. A vehicle has to meet the standards to be imported, or be able to be modified to conform. California and New York and possibly some other states have an ammedment where they can require additional emissions requirements in addition to the federal requirements, but that's another issue.

        What is done at a state level is licensing. It's up to the state what vehicles can be licensed. California as mentioned may be more stringent, but there are people driving around Skylines so I'm sure it's possible.

          Here is an interesting place to look to learn about the certification of the Nissan GTS/GTR.



          I'm trying to see if I can find an example where outside crash tests weren't done -- I.E. it would need a letter from Mazda.

          It can also sometimes be done if it's similar to a model sold here -- but the imported model has to be LHD.
