I'm looking for a clean (not crashed or rusted to the door handles) 4WD Protege. The plan is to do a BPT conversion, so a sour engine or gear box is okay. I'm really looking for a 5-speed car, but I could live with an auto if the price was right.

there are two for sale here right now (a freak occurance!), but one has some rust and the other needs the roof skin replaced. these come up VERY rarely so good luck finding a totally clean one, especially up northEscort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

I'm trying to avoid anything that needs body work. Good body work takes lots of time and $$$ to do right. I think i'd have more money into fixing either car than spending the cash on one that was clean. Plus, I'm willing to travel to get the right car.
Mazda imported about the same number of GTXs & Protege 4WDs; but I can find four times the number of GTXs for sale. What the deal with that?

ive only seen 5 speed ones
probably because the GTX was a "cool" "fast" car... while the 4wd pro was pretty lame due to the weak motor. i'm sure a lot of them got junked and crushed by now, while the GTX is kind of a collecters item.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

Yes, 4-wheel steer. On the 90-92 (I forget which years, might be 91 only) 626 4-door with the Turbo 2.2. They look like a 626 GT, but the wheels where painted white. I think white was the only color available, I'm not 100% sure on that, but all of the ones I have seen where white. Very rare; I think they delivered only one per district.

The only 4WD Protegés in North America were sold in 1990 and 1991. They were available with the base-level SOHC (B8) engine only, and almost all were sold with automatic transmissions. Almost none were sold outside of Canada and the far northern states of the U.S.
That's why they're hard to come by, and solid ones even harder.

hmmm. aside from one auto 4wd on here, aren't all our members sporting 5 speed? (some with 2)
I remember fazor saying there were a couple up north in Alaska. you said you were willing to drive.....No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

I got one for sale.. But theres rust. People here call it a rust bucket. But its not that bad. I've actually taken care of the cosmetics of it. The only other question is the underside. But jasoncsescort's looked HORRID compared to mine and look at his now after a little elbow grease.

I'm trying to avoid a car that needs body work. If I end up doing body-work, I'll have more money in the car, than if I just invested in a clean GTX. I don't know how different the 4WD and LX cars are. For example, can the rear sub-frame from a 4-WD be bolted into a LX? How difffernt are the floor pans? Did the 4WD cars get any additional bracing? Depending on the anwsers, the hot set-up might be to get a LX from the South-west and convert it to a 4WD.

the whole underbody is VERY different from front to rear. nothing bolts up... especially in the rear end.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

That's too bad, it would have made life easier. Have you tried the swap? or taken measurements? The last time I was under a 4WD Protege, it was under warranty! so I can't really trust my memory. But it seems very un-Mazda like to have a completly different chassis then put the lamest motor avaliable in it. Look at the MX3, not one, but two special engines. I would have thought that they would have started with a plain Protege body and just added the 4WD running gear.
