from what ive been told the only way to get the silicone fluid out would be to drill a hole. ive also heard that it is the consistency of silly putty so it wont exactly drain, either. i have a used miata vlsd that i'm going to drop in there at some point.
sarge if you're looking for one, i believe FTjandra has one lying around that he doesnt plan to use. you also need the vlsd stub axles, i'm not sure if he has those (they are different)Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

people you have the miata diff, how do you like it?
also if the diff is still together can i just unbolt mine and put the
miata diff in? or do i have to take the diff apart and swap stuff?
also do you need anything else for the miata lsd swap or just the diff?Last edited by ryan1; 01-05-2009, 03:21 PM.5 boosted bp cars,why...

no more diff ?s, problem solved
87-89 mazda gtx
90-94 mazda gtx/gtr
protege 4wd
the entire rear differential interchanges between these models, the only difference is the GTR differential is viscious lsd and the others are open differentials. All rear gear ratios are the same
--------------------------------------------------------------------
90-93 mazda miatas use the same 6 inch rear differential but it uses a different housing that wont bolt into our AWD cars but the open or lsd differentials can be swaped. you will need to use the ring gear from the AWD car as the gear ratio is different also use the AWD stub shafts.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
94-97 mazda miatas use a 7 inch rear differential. This can be swaped into an earlier miata using several 94+ parts, but the 7 inch diff can not be swaped into a AWD without heavy custom modding. certian year/model RX7's also use the 7 inch rear and that differential can be swaped between the 7 inch miata and rx7 diff housing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
there is also a 8 inch rear diff used in the last generation rx7 but there is no point in ever using that on one of our AWD models cause you will blow any AWD mazda tranny before you blow that differential"See that car, in the 80's that car was deadly." yeah thats all you need. idk if anyone has compared side by side but it is likely the exact same VLSD they used in the 323 gtr.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

you still should put in new carrier bearings, and pinion bearing, and seal, and a new crush sleeve, and set the backlash etc. As far as I know, the ring gear needs to be taken off of the Protege open diff, and put onto the Miata VLSD, so you'd need new bolts to do that also.
That's basically why I haven't put a miata vlsd in yet, because I just haven't had the time, or resources yet to have that part done.

i figured replacing all of the wear parts was a given
yes you do need to swap ring gears, didn't realize that you had to replace the bolts though?Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI
