the axles happen to be out on my Protege. Some students are going to attempt to rebuild the trans. the rear output shaft and bearings are toast. It should be intresting to see what the quote to rebuild it is. My guess it is going to be cheaper to buy a gtr engine and trans over the cost of rebuilding the stock POS. Anyways. I come up with 24 splines into the diff and 26 splines on the outside. I did not see any "missing" splines. the pic did not turn out, but the left inner is huge, way longer than a FWD. Car is bone stock SOHC 4WD, 5-speed Protege.
the missing splines can be seen if you seperate the FR axle from the intermediate shaft... the female side of that joint (cv side) has the missing splines.

you rock Rivet! way to have it all setup to show. This thread is now an awesome 4WD Protege resource.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.
so i'm pretty sure that thereildeal is right that the passanger side kia axles are the same as the 4wd axles.... i just tried putting on the ones the company sent me and they are just front wheel drive protege axles

so i'm still having issues with my passenger axle, i sent it back and they are having trouble finding a correct axle since they don't make the 4wd mazda axles anymore... i'm hoping that the 1995 kia sephia axle will work and i just realized that in my first post it seems the spline counts for the 4wd protege and 1.6L mx3 are the same... is this correct?

Not sure if this helps, but on the B6T GTX, the passenger side axle between the hub and the intermediate shaft is thinner than the FWD axle. But IIRC either the awd OR fwd axle will fit there. The intermediate shaft is awd specific.
i think i just got more confused cause if all the AWD axles are the same then how can the b6t AWD axle be the same as a FWD axle since the FWD axle on the female side is 24 spline and the AWD female side axle is 28 spline

BF GTX != BG GTX, so just ignore what he said. you have to make hybrid axles to put a BG drivetrain into a BF.

kia axles have 26 spline outers, and 28 spline inners. the drivers side wont work for obvious reasons, but the passenger side might. depends if the length is correct or not.
