He MUST be crazy or he wouldn't BE here!

The only difference tween the BPT and GTR trans is the gearset in the GTR has been shotpeened at the factory.

Pikespeak is spot on as to why they break, though I have a crazy theory that the gearlube Mazda specifies has a part in it too, see my thread here for more details, http://www.wihandyman.com/forum/show...103#post459103

Oh yeah. Everyone with an AWD/4WD trans should do the following every once in a while: Go under the car and grab the rear driveshaft right where it comes outta the back of the trans. Grab it like you wanna choke it to death; this should come naturally to anyone who's ever had to work on one of these (mad props to Mark Todd for that bit of mental imagry). As you shake that thing like a terrier killing a rat, if you feel any play, it's time to tighten the hell outta the big ol' nut you see there, and if that doesn't get rid of the play, it's time to replace the output shaft bearing. If there's no play, you're good to go, till it blows up! Simple.

i got a n/a 4wd so i will be swaping the t case, from what i have seen is same ratio,im still not sure what trans i got i know it came from front clip that had gtr engine with gtr harnes, ecu but it had gtx bumper.all gears look same i dont see any coolor diffrence, too bad mazda dont have like numbes stamped out so yo can tell them apart.Looking from experience that trans doont look too weak inside, i took apart many vw transmisions(i work for vw dealer) and the stronger boxes have about same sizes gears, dsm tranies look about same. i just hope that something was wrong with that trans before.

Im hoping for 300+ whp,im running t3t4 60-1 at 1.4-1.5 bar and supporting mods. The rason i dont drive EVO yet is that protege was mine first car since 1997 and it was turbo since 1998 when Sportcompactcar and Turbo magazines tought that 5psi was the most boost that any stock n/a motor can hold. I alwsys done all mine work on mine car by mine self, and all the tuning. Mine first turbo was out off mercury capri that had a B6T i ported the mainfold and bolted only with 5 bolts to the head,i had too cut all the corner holes open to be able to bolt it up. In 1998 at 10 psi with fmu car made 198whp and 190ft-lb.

Are your VW trannys you're comparing to AWD? or fwd?

I was just looking at gears, bearings, the vw awd setup is diffrent it has a transfer case bolted in too right axle and then it has a haldex electronic diferntial in rear that is controled by module and using wet multi clutch.i would say you can compare protege geras and bearing sizes to vw O2A 5 speed trans witch is used in older vr6 models and most 99 and up jetta, golf, gti models.

Ok, so you're talking about FWD trannys.

Think about it a minute... when you clutch dump a FWD the tires are going to slip so even if the tranny looks cheesier inside it'll withstand more power than the Mazda AWD tranny will.

All 4 wheels griping pavement keeps all of the available torque inside the gearbox instead of turning into tire smoke.

If you plan on running a NA BG AWD tranny I'll bet you'll find out that the final drive ratio is a lot lower than a turbo BG AWD tranny.

I was right about the carrier being bad... now I'm curious to see if I'm right about the final drive being in the ~4.27 range.

i believe all the BG AWD trannies use the same gear ratios
                          Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

Im sure that ratio is same i counted the teeth 37:11, and i understand that awd cars have more grip.
