Jay is working on it w/ his rallycar, he has one of the plates from the original batch where i got mine.
Also, the guy who designed the plate has a BF GTX with a BPT swap, so the plate is oriented correctly for the transfer to clear the block.
So far i don't think anyone in the states has finished an AWD swap, and i'm the only one who's done it FWD (Ferdi is close, though).

The awd list is easy. 88-90 celica alltrac. The camry and rav4 have a version that may or may not work, but is not as strong and with an open centerdiff and therefore certainly isn't worth the effort of installing.
I hope to get started again on the rallycar this weekend or so. House projects have eaten all available spare time lately...
a ST165/ST185/ST205 celica alltrac trans would all work for awd. several of those were never available in the US, but like mazda gtx/gtr motors you can get them pretty easily from importers.
for FWD, your best bet is a 93+ camry/solara V6 with the 1MZFE engine. my trans came out of a 2000 camry. the donor MUST BE V6, the 4 cyl trans is different/weaker. easiest way to ID an E-series if its out of the car, is by the block off plate surrounding the passenger side axle "hole". the weaker S-series trans doesnt have this block off plate, it is one piece like the g-series.
another option might be an MR2 turbo trans, but in that case you would need to do machine work to "flip" the shift linkage around to the back side of the trans. these also tend to be more expensive as they are from a sports car vs. a family sedan, but 93+ did come with a stock viscous LSD.
one thing to note, in '93 toyota updated/improved the synchro design of the E-series gearboxes. 92 and older E-series are known to get "notchy" as they get older and the synchros wear prematurely. of course they can be replaced but it's not an easy or cheap thing to do.

so the camry awd trannys are not much better than the stock mazda ones?
does anyone have more info about these odd 4wd camry trannies?
are they the same pattern as the all-trac ones, same size, cause i know were i can get one really,really cheap and could use it for mock up, if they were the same.
did any other cars run the 2wd e153, ie like escort gt's and mazdas are the same, or how even how kias ran the mazda box and motor for a while.
ive found a toyota hilux clutch that is 225mm (correct for my flywheel) and 21spline 29.8mm spline diameter (correct for toyota box) that sound about right?
the disc i used was for a 93 toyota pickup truck, 4 cyl, RWD. worked perfectly with the mazda pressure plate on the fwd flywheel, aside from having to clearance the bellhousing for the pressure plate.

i wouldnt go that far... the camry AWD box is still plenty strong. on all the E-series, the main gearbox section is nearly identical. to swap from FWD to AWD you basically just swap out the diff and bolt up the rear transfer. the camry box has an OPEN center diff instead of viscous, putting it (functionally) on par with the protege 4wd gearbox. its still strong as hell, although that rear transfer may be weaker than the viscous/celica version.
the bolt pattern should be the same in theory but... i cant say for sure.
not that i know of. ive listed all the ones i came up with in my hours and hours of research.

ummm something like that. ST165 but with an open center diff.
i dont think the 'rolla one will work, i dont think it had an S (3S**, 5S**, etc) series motor. probably a different bellhousing pattern.

I shift about 8500 rpm (8800 rm redline) and am running a stock st185 transmission with an st205 rear differential.

There is a "wide gear" and "narrow gear" version of the Toyota E series boxes.
The wide gear use 20mm wide gears, and are fitted to Camry V6s, ST165,185 & 205 celicas, MR2 turbo and supercharged AW11 (and really early supercharged AE92s)
The narrow gear use 13mm wide gears and are mostly found in RAV4s and later supercharged AE92s and Truenos.
It *might* be possible to avoid the problems associated with widening the track by using AE92 or AW11 4AGZE driveshafts with the E153, which I believe are a bit shorter.
