    MZR/Duratec 2.0 swap?

Hi all! Well I suppose that I should start with no I don't own a protege although I have a line on an early 90's model. What I do have is a Duratec20 out of a 2007 focus (34,500km) that I picked up on the cheap for a Lotus project that didn't happen. I now find myself with an engine and a bunch of speed parts (fidanza 10# wheel, ITB manifold, ITB's, turbo manifold... the list goes on) with nowhere to put it. Has anyone attempted this? Should I? I'm not overly familiar with the BG chassis and the only thing that I can see as being a major concern at the moment would be the lack of room at the front of the engine compartment (the breathing is reversed on the Duratec), I may have to scrap the idea of the ITB's and just make up a plenum to bolt onto my manifold. Anyhow any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ted.

it will be all custom fab work, I'm not even sure if the 07 was a zetec and if it has the right pattern to bolt up to a ZX2 trans.

Go for it. I so so so so wanna put a 2.3 in front of the gt4 box we're installing. Whatever you end up with, I suspect an adapter plate is in your future.
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

        Ive looked into it,

MZR would technically fit if you tried hard enough but lots and lots of custom bits would need to be made, i suspect flywheel and adapter plate as a minimum.

Cant really be done in the 4wd celica box coversion, crankcase is to thick for the transfer, better off going for a 1mz v6 that bolts up

The MZR uses a G series trans stock. At least the 2.3 does in the mazda6 and fusion. Id just use one of those if u did a 2.0 swap.

dont think it matters. Pretty sure the 2.0 uses that same bell housing as the 2.3. just do a search on a focus forum. The info is out there.

I really looked into this at 1 point, and yes the 2.0 and 2.3 MZR use the same bellhousing so a trans for either engine will work. I dont think it would of been 2 bad on the fab work, the engine mounts appeared to be in the approx locations, some custom axles, and megasquirt, then add all the N/A Cosworth goodies, which for some reason only work with the Ford version of the engine, but I think that has more to do with the stock engine management. The mechanical differences between the Mazda 3 version and Focus version were minimal, and mostly involved the head.

I found most all this information from searching many hours on focus and mazda3 forums.

                    Duratec 20
The 993 is a 2.0 L (122 CID; 1999 cc) version built in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. Bore is 87.5 mm (3.44 in) and stroke is 83.1 mm (3.27 in).

It is used in the US/Argentinian Focus and the Brazilian Ford EcoSport. (European Fiesta ST, Ford Focus and Focus C-Max, Mondeo, S-Max, Transit and Galaxy use Duratec HE engines). On the 2007 Focus, output is 136 hp (101 kW) at 6000 rpm with 136 ft·lbf (184 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm. The 2007 Focus sold in the US states of CA, NY, MA, VT and ME comes with the required PZEV emissions 20E version which produces 130 hp (97 kW) at 6000 rpm with 129 ft·lbf (175 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm. The PZEV is available as an option in border states. The compression ratio for both versions is 10:1. On the 2008 Focus, output is 140 hp (100 kW) at 6000 rpm with 136 ft·lbf (184 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm. The 2009 Focus Coupe with manual transmission has 143 hp. The 2008 Focus sold in the US states of CA, NY, MA, VT and ME comes with the required PZEV emissions 20E version which produces 132 hp (98 kW) at 6000 rpm with 133 ft·lbf (180 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm.[1] The PZEV is available as an option in border states. The compression ratio for both versions is 10:1. It has an aluminum engine block and an aluminum DOHC cylinder head. The cylinders are lined with cast iron. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods, a one-piece cast crankshaft, and a cast aluminum or reinforced plastic intake manifold. It does not have variable valve timing. The power output is less than the Mazda version which does have VVT.[citation needed]

The plastic intake manifold on early versions has a major fault due to poor quality materials. The manifold has swirlplates mounted on a square shaft at the aperture where it mounts to the cylinder head. Early 4 cylinder Duratec engines can be ruined when the swirlplates break off and enter a cylinder. Most cases are of single swirlplates but also the shaft can wear and break. Early signs of this fault are evidenced by a ticking noise emanating from the front of the engine. This can occur as early as 25K miles, with failure typically occurring after about 90K miles.

I have done some crazy engine swaps in my day, don't take this the wrong way, but generally you swap engines for performance reasons. The Duratec 20 would have been sweet in your Lotus 7? project, but kind of a boring swap for a protege. I would be tempted to sell it and buy a BP /FE3/ KL (all bolt in high performance engines). You could likely sell the Focus engine buy any one of those 3 swap engines and still have change in your pocket. (The Focus engine as you already know is a popular Lotus 7 kit car powerplant) .

I am not anti-Ford either (I have a Mustang). I even seriously considered a ZX-2 ZTEC swap in my 323.
