youre backfiring like was said above. this isnt exactly ideal for a street car because you WILL burn valves if you do it regularly. i had a friend with a built integra. . . his two step caused him to backfire every shift when the two step was on. took a while of severe beatings on the street and track (he drove it REALLY hard) but when it finally went to ****, he sent it to earl laskey (if you dont know who he is/was then search google, and you'll understand) and earl told him thats what happened.

backfiring at will sounds cool as hell, is fun to scare people with, and im going to get a two step myself when i go turbo for consistency in launches. burnt valves dont happen much with a turbo setup and a two step. . . they just torture the turbo a little. mitsubishi designed a backfiring system for rally to specifically work only on upshifts to keep the turbo spinning (dont know if they still do) and it was pretty successfull. im pretty sure now its something they can do internal to the ecu.

the rally system youre talking about is called an anti lag system (ALS), almost all manufacturers run them.

Mitsubishi is not the only one who have had their take on anti-lag designs. And the system on most Evolutions were a combination of an EGR and air injected anti-lag(emissions related). And it works differently than most ignition cut rev-limiters.

Most rally cars use a method of air injection directly into the exhaust manifold and run rich off throttle. No ignition retarding whats so ever as the extra fuel and injected air ignite in the exhaust manifold where it counts. Though this form of "proper' anti-lag puts some serious stress on the turbo, manifold, and head.

Check this link out, its about an Audi rally car in the 80's that used an air-injected anti-lag setup. Notice that the car used an extra wastegate as a means to introduce the air(straight form the turbo) into the exhaust manifold. It had to be constantly worked on, i.e. cracks and burnt valves.

Yes, and theres is more than one way to do it. Which way works best is totally up to how much lag you want. Ultimately the only way to get rid of lag is to change/add a super charger to the setup(but that would be a costly setup).
