in all honesty its not really worth revving past that anyway, the efficiency of the vj20 drops off so much

the benefit of the higher rev really comes into affect when your using a bigger turbo, its quite noticable with the bigger turbo and bp26 ecu which I was using before, however I imagine It'll be even more noticeable when I get everything hooked up with my standalone.

So, what is the highest compression ratio that you can safely go to with the stock BP ecu (as found on a '91 Protege LX)? I don't want to go crazy high. Is 10:1 safe?

Am I going to end up like this guy? --->

its not a good idea to blame the compression ratio for that damage.
chances are too poor of conditions & high EGT's as a lack of tuning.
Matt fulgham is running 12+ compression so i think you'll be safe

Isn't he the guy that sells Megasquirt kits, though? I would assume he is running MS to go that high. Megasquirt at this point is out of my budget. Is 10:1 too high for the stock ECU?

Yes, there are so many factors that could have led to that damage.

I personally run 9:1 non-forged miata pistons with a slightly shaved head (to straighten it) with zero issues. I have bp26 injectors and ecu and a probe fmic with a turbo rx7 afm. Only issues I've ever had was with lower octane (91) and boosting very near 15 psi.

I need/want a bigger turbo as the vj20 is a dinky little turbo like everyone says and it dramaticly drops off far before red line, instantaneous spoolup (2500rpm) is annoying too.

3 grand spoolup is nice put a VF8/10/12 in there
