On my case I went to a junk yard and borrowed another fuel regulator, let it dry out and dremmel/drilled the guts out of it so it was just another line. Buy yourself an Aeromotive or similar brand 1 to 1 adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
Things to consider:
Walbro in-tank fuel pump, sometimes it is easy to mount, sometimes not...
I have a sticky somewhere on how to install it as I have seen several variations of the mounting brackets of the fuel pump. If I remember correctly, the 323 OEM fuel pump is huge, on the Escort and Proteges is smaller, similar to the Miata. In my case the orientation of the filter was opposite from factory so I had to invert the mount.
Going back to the fuel regulator, that was one of my options to dremmel it out, I was living in California for a while and it was the only way to pass inspection.
Later I bought the adjustable fuel pressure regulator for a CRX, I had a fitting from a universal old ghetto OBX regulator (stay away from OBX brand, LOL). It is the one you cut the top and mount to your existing regulator.
My BP has the OEM reg of a CRX, cut the top and install the adjustable bracket bought on EGAY.
About the RX-7 AFM mine I adjusted until it maintained idle at 800-900 without touching timing etc. Maybe I trimmed a little the TB idle screw and that was it. Always always mark the AFM original teeth location in case you set it wrong.
Having a Walbro is highly recommended, remember you may see 50 psi but when those 550cc open up the OEM fuel pump is reaching its limits and usually does not maintain a constant pressure. If one thing you do not want is fuel starvation. You want that engine to be good on fuel when boosted. The OEM pump may read 50 at idle but who knows if it drops when doing 7000 rpms and 550 cc injectors do demand a good pump to maintain a constant pressure ALL the time.
I am not turbo yet, soon to be, finally registered my other car, an Escort GT so the project will began. Another thing, some good easy tuning can be done with an Apexi, yes and yes, it is ghetto piggy back but it does help.
By the way, What spark plugs do you run on your turbo and gap?
It is recommended to go two numbers colder or the usual NGK 7/8 and to close the gap just a little.Last edited by psiturbo; 10-28-2009, 04:23 PM.
