    MS1 v3.0 and COPs

I'm in the middle of doing some research on the miataturbo forums as we speak, but, I have still yet to find a solid answer and any further insight from fellow MS users would be great. Do you need to have an external ignitor when using the Toyota COPs, or can you drive them directly through MS? Options and opinions?

if your talking about the cop swap on there, i think its fired from ms, cause the one i seen someone just emptied an ignitor for all the connections....

Yeah, that's what I was looking at and I'm digging for a solid answer, so I can either add to my list of needed parts or scratch it off completely. I came across a really good deal for 4 nib Toyota COPs that I'm going to pick up and I've already found a source for the pigtails

A coil needs an igniter - or a high current driver. You can build them inside your MS using BIP transistors or you can have them outside. If you are using a coil pack that has them attached to it, then it's easy. Generally I prefer using them externally because they generate a lot of internal noise in the MS.

As for MAP sensors - we have the cheapest 3 bar and 4 bar map sensors on the market while using the exact sensor itself that others use - check the out on our site.

I'm almost certain that the COPs that I'm getting have built in ignitors already.

While I'm at it and do not see the need to make another thread for the following, I'd like to get a few opinions on the IAT sensor placement. I would like to avoid heat soak as much as I can, because I drive my car like I stole it and heat soak may be an issue during the hotter months after stopping for a bit. Before the throttle body after the bov or after the intercooler behind the bumper?

mine is where lex shows everyone to put it, do your self a favor, ignore that one...lol.... ill be extenting my wires and putting mine low in the cold charge pipe, or in the fmic tank on the cold side..... if i let the car sit for like 20 minutes and the piping warms up, itll lean out a bit and want to stall. im sure theres something i can adjust , but if i feather it and go its fine and cools fast. the miata guys all say to go outside the bay, and away from heat. i might try and wrap my upper cold side piping to the throttle body in heat wrap, see if it helps any...

If you're running external igniters then you just need to drive the spark logic circuit using the MS and the little transistors that run the LEDs are enough. This is the preferred way.

In terms of heatsoak for the IAT - yes in and around the engine bay it will heatsoak if the car is off but it also gives you a more accurate reading of charge temperatures entering the TB. I've heard of people putting it in the freeze plug of the manifold as well. It takes a minute or 2 of driving for the sensor to cool to actual air temperature once it is heatsoaked in those locations. Note that heatsoak may still happen in other locations as well.

You can certainly play around with location - just make sure it is AFTER any cooler or methanol spray.

Originally I was thinking about tapping the manifold for it just because it wouldn't require me to weld the bung on, but it seems like that may not be such a great idea.

the intake mani was my original idea, but i figured the piping wouldnt heat soak as much, and cool alot faster...

well that and i didnt wanna hack a gtr intake either...lol..

the toyota cops have the igniters built in so you just need a 5V signal from MS to trigger them. Use leds D14 and D16 for that purpose.

I have a set of 4 toyota cops with the harness already done to run in wasted spark mode. if anybody wants them, 60$+shipping for everything, I have no use for them.
