    building a GT3076 off a VJ23

Right now I've sent one of my VJ23 to a turbo shop to install new oil seals and for balancing. While the turbo was in pieces we took some measurements to build a better turbo from the VJ23 turbine housing and guess what, it's possible.

The turbine housing will need to be machined to accept the new GT30 wheel. The heart of the turbo will be from a GT28 cause it's hold by a V-clamp just like the VJ. The V-clamp flange of the VJ23 need a smaller diameter just as the GT28 one. It's possible to fit an AR .60 or a small AR .70 compressor housing, once bolted on the stock GTR manifold, it will clear the block and the engine mount, so no need to add a spacer or anythingelse. The total cost will be around 1600$.

I'll keep you updated on this when done...

Soon to be MS3X, COP and 28psi!
-2008 Mitsubishi Evolution X MR, AEM turbo inlet system, 3" magnaflow exhaust.
    -2006 Pimped Grand Caravan 3.8L GT40...I'm kidding, it's stock

    sounds expensive

how about an adapter plate for the manifold and a standard GT3076? win?

Is that the cost for the new turbo and machining?

I like the idea of keeping the turbine housing, it just bolt right up with no mods. There's not much room for a larger turb. From the measurement I took, if I use a GT30 turbine housing would'nt fit cause the compressor housing would'nt clear the front engine mount.

I am also going to use a 2.5" compressor inlet instead of the 4".

yea i could see something that big getting in the way with the factory manifold lol.

sounds like a lot of work, but hell people pay to have the vj-20 machined for larger centers, and you can even get it converted to a T3 center...lol.

It's all about what you want, and for plug and play this sounds like the easiest way to go...plus if you ever blow it there won't be issues finding replacements. Also it'll really help re-sale value since its fully serviceable compared to the vj-23.

That's exactly that! the spare parts will be available. I also forgot to mention, by keeping the hot side housing, I can keep both my powersteering pump and my A/C compressor.

Yeah but your downpipe has to suffer.

It's expensive but not far from what a GT30 + adapters etc will cost in the end. A 3076 is a sizeable turbo for the 1.8 however.
