I always see and have read before that the turbo oil drain should be above the oil level to prevent oil backing up and killing the bearings. Now knowing this, I was a little surprised to see this on a factory OEM turbo vehicle. Look at the picture and discuss.

Well, it's draining a little bit above the bottomw of the sump, I guess that's good enough. What car is this?'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and

the oil level in that pipe should not be any higher than the oil level in the pan. Even with the oil from the turbo pouring in there it should level out.
The lines on our setups are not nearly as long so there is little room for the oil to back up in the line before its at the mouth of the turbo. That line is incredibly long in comparison."Discontent is the first necessity of progress."

^^I understand what your saying. So really it does not matter where you put it as long as there is enough distance from the turbo to the oil level in the pan, and some distance for "just in case"92 Mazda MX3 GS> For sale, $1750 OBO

ill go out on a limb and say yes. unless someone know of some strange property of physics that state otherwise. that line should never fill all the way up to the turbo"Discontent is the first necessity of progress."

beware of excess crankcase pressure! In the situation where the mouth of the turbo was not much higher than the oil level in the return line and you start to get some heavier than normal blow by, crankcase pressure would rise and a surge could force oil into the turbo.
It would require a pretty precise set of circumstances, but it is possible so I would leave a healthy "just in case" factor.

not sure what years are effected but a few of the audi 1.8t's ive had in needed the oil drains removed and cleaned or replaced . theyre pretty good at filling with burnt oil...lol..... aside from that, ive deffinatly always wondered why the return was barely an inch off the bottom of the pan....92 protege lx-

I'd worry about heavy braking as well, forcing oil up the line. This line here, prolly not as it's pretty long, but if I was DIYing, I'd set it up so's there no real chance of backfeed. Feedback? Flow reversal? Whatever. Mine is going into the pan a couple inches above fill level. I can't imagine that can hurt anything.'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
