    Boost cut killed the race

It was a little below freezing and I was headed to work. An RX-8 was next to me as we left the light and we both started out kind of quiet. As we started up the hill though, he started getting on it. I tried to keep up but when it get's this cold, my Pro won't rev past 6K~. I had to wave bye bye.

I don't know if he seemed fast because my car was sick or if he really was that fast. Burns me I can't get up in cold weather.

Why does cold ambient temperature air have a negative effect on your engine's performance? In my car, once the engine has reached operating temperature, the colder the OAT the better my engine performs due to the increased air density which leads to higher BHP output. For me, the difference in engine performance is quite striking between summer and winter running.

He said that he cant get it up when its cold....

      They make pills for that

I never remember RX8s being too fast. My 2nd gen BP pro kept up with one.
I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.

Boost cut has always been a problem for this motor. If the VAF isn't positioned properly, it'll happen. 25 degree weather will cause it, or maybe the fact we were going up hill when it was so cold. IDK why it does it. Normally, I can get wheel spin in third gear. Never when it's cold though.

I should swap out my other GTX ECU and see what happens. The other one is already installed in the project car so it's probably not going to happen but now I'm all curious.

Lol, a pill will make my car go faster? Yea Baby! Wait, will I have to drive with an erection all the time?

Edit-at least I think it's boost cut. I'm certainly no certified mechanic but I've been on this board long enough to know that a turbo should shine in cold weather. The increased air density messes with the computer somehow I think.

IknowIknow-------Okay--If I can generate enough money from side jobs this summer, I'll do it. I'll have to work on creating a new money stream but if I'm able, my reward will be the highest of all rewards. I will be able to beat slow sports cars on cold winter days That, and I'll be able to help support Stratified Auto which I also think is rewarding.

Another caveat, I have to get my Project to a working plateau.

We should have a really nice and tidy setup for you by the time you're ready to go MS. Let's just say no more boomslang harness in the very near future

I've never ever had a problem with the flapper VAF in my turbo wagon. I LOVE the end of fall/beginning of winter, when the roads are still perfectly dry, but the air is cold. especially when it's foggy, it's like a freakin' shot of nitrous.

and my little toyota corolla can beat RX8's, even modified ones, and that was before I upgraded the cams.

It's a volume air flow meter. Colder air = more denser, but the car doesn't know that because there's still the same volume. More air, you run leaner/more efficient. More power, but more chance of hitting boost/fuel cut.

Raced a new Jetta GLI last night. Same up hill route. The temp must have been 40 or a little below. I was positioned well for my RPM's in third gear and was ready to go when he started pulling up on me. I got on it a bit to see if he was game and he kept up, so I went all in. I wasn't watching the tach but the wall came too soon. I feathered back on the throttle but it just wouldn't give. I shifted to forth and floored it but not on that hill. He went by me so fast that I don't think he knew I was trying to race. The little K&N sticker on the side window made me laugh, just a little.

I read most of Ace's thread about going lean into boost and considered trying a plug in the SMIC feed duct on cold nights. It's not ideal but I'm sure it would work since it's only on cold nights that I hit boost cut. My next idea is more of a question. How much current does that VAF-fuel pump mod wire carry? I may not have used a big enough wire if it's supposed to actually power the fuel pump. I think I might try the switching the Y code VAF that's in it now with the B code that I have.

JDM BP 26 like it comes from the factory in a USDM 91 Protege LX.
