Proud new owner of a 93 protege

Hi all, just moved to colorado from michigan with my trusty subaru outback, but when my brother offered to sell me his 99 2.5rs I had to jump on it. This meant I owned two cars with manual transmissions and had one girlfriend who is not happy about the situation. So, the outback is up for sale and we found a 93 protege on craigslist for $1500 with 75k miles on it (easily the best deal on an automatic we'd seen in 3 weeks). I had a 96 626 a few years ago and that car served me very well. Certainly wasn't fast or fun, but it was comfortable, cheap, and reliable. Se I've got high hopes for the protege, the engine is good, has new exhaust, good tires, tight suspension.... and a transmission that is shifting pretty hard. My mechanic just called and said he doesn't want to flush the fluid because he's afraid he'll kill the tranny. So, here I am, trying to find information on auto transmissions for my car. Don't know if it will actually die on me, but I figured I'd better be prepared for it if it does. So thats my story. I'll be browsing the forum for any and all information on the transmissions including other cars with the same parts (sounds like some escorts?) but if anyone has any other information or advice, I'd love to hear it.

    Thanks,

    Dave
