'91 protege LX, bought for 350. front end wreck, fixed, first mazda owned and I gave it a tune-up, had to replace o-ring in distr. tried to set timing old school way, didn't know to ground to ten, ran for months, need to set right, need help, I also turned the air intake screw with out grounding, my LX is the only car I have can't afored another car, I found this site by chance looking for help to fix my ride, I'm a vet on meds, I think slowing and might need pics on how to set idle with a tach, and timing before I totally distroy my engine, I'm sorry if I'm not doing the intro right, dannyray

there's no proper way to start an intro lol welcome to CP.

So far you have the idea, you need to have the car in "diagnostics mode" to set or adjust any sensor. You're correct with the TEN & GRN at the diagnostics box (jump with a wire or paper clip). I can't remember where the diagnostics box is though, mine's been relocated lol.

Set the timing first, which will be 10 degrees. If you're unsure how to use a timing gun, check youtube out for some helpful videos.

Once your timing is set, you can readjust your throttle screw and settle your RPMs down to around 750-800 then shut the car down. Pull the jumper wire and she should idle around the area you set it.

If it's an LX, it should be BP DOHC powered, so 10 degrees. If it's a SOHC engine then idk what the timing would be lol, so 5 sounds right.

The crank pulley has a small line etched into it on the inner ring for timing marks, I usually mark it with a paint pen. Then the other associated timing numbers will be on the plastic cover that protects the timing belt assembly. It'll protrude a bit with numbers and lines indicating the degree intervals.

Here's an internet pic, yellow arrows are indicating what I mentioned above.

have to replace crank pulley missing small chunk of inner ring, that must be were the mark was. I'm replacing timing belt alittle frayed, might as well change water pump, working outside in gravel driveway, its hot , I'll do alittle in the morn and some in the evening shade, I'll let you know when I start it up.

I have to work on my driveway, too. Hot in the summer, cold in the winter.

yep I've been there myself a few times lol not the best working conditions, but such as life I guess! Don't forget to keep track of where your cams are sitting though or you could have some start up issues after.

BP engines run on the hot side. you should not be able to touch the valve cover of any engine while @ operating temp without burning yourself

I've been reading other posts on cam spockets, TDC-I up, E-up, with back plate, I have them right on BUT, they say that the lobes on I & E face each other no way, not on this 1.8 DOHC, my Intake lobes cyl#1 point to firewall and EXhast face the radiator, my exhast manifold is popping and cracking, its hot, never done that before.
