    Mazda Enthusiast from Miami

Hello I currently have a 1990 Mazda Rx7 Turbo II and im looking at picking up a 1992 Protege to daily drive. Rotary blah blah blah, 420whp, fire, noise and brimstone. Just need a normal person daily. Joining up to do my homework. The protege in mind is cheap and has a broken tranny seal. Trying to find if its auto or standard transmission and if its auto the process and parts needed to make it manual. Also other things to look for.

Here is the Rex, sexy blue harbor metallic. Anywho thanks for the help im about to receive from data mining the **** out of clubprotege. I was once a clueless new car owner when i bought the rx7 and while i did learn a whole lot, couldnt even change my oil and ive pulled the motor and tranny at least 3x since them plus wiring and all sorts of **** i never want to be uninformed again.

Hey John! So to answer your question,
Compatible manual transmissions are any bp (dohc) powered protege 90-94 first gens and a few 2nd gen protégés had bps, not many though. It was the ES trim model for the second gen and the first gen was the lx that came with bps here. Other options are 91-96 ford escort gt, not the lx though, just the bp powered gt. you've also got the option to swap to a Kia trans out of a sephia. I can't remember the year range off the top of my head. But for that swap you'll need the trans, half shaft(bolts to engine block and both cv axles as they are different spline counts than the Mazda/ford ones. If you look in my build log you'll see what I did for the manual tranny swap if you end up going that route. It's honestly pretty simple.
