Noob Needs Guidance! 2000 Es FP to FS-ZE Swap...LSD?

He all! I blow the engine in my 2000 ES and I fugered if i'm going to spend the money and time to drop a new engine in 'er I might as well make an upgrade! So I have an imported ZE on its way with an ECU, i'm hoping this is going to be more or less a straight swap using my original wiring harness, engine mounts, tranny Etc. Anyone know better?

I'm also hoping to switch my stock open differential for an LSD (preferably a helical), Anybody have any recommendations?

After some poking around in the FAQ's I think I have a F25M-R transition, can anyone Tell me if i'm right? Anyone know what other models/years my tranny was used, it would make it way easier to find comparable parts.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Welcome to CP.

The F25M-R transmission was used in the 1.6 L ZM-DE and the 1.8 L FP-DE. The 2.0 L engine used in the 2001-2003 models uses a different transmission.

      Thanks for the reply Goldstar,

so if I have a 2000 with the 1.8L is it safe to assume that I do have the F25M-R, Is it going to be compatible with a 2001-2003 FS engine? If not, is it a matter of mounting it to the block or just inappropriate gear ratios or it being to week to handle 170hp?

      Thanks,
      Mike

        You're welcome.

The 2001-2003 FS-DE and FS-DET (turbo) engines use the G15M-R transmission as do at least some models of the FS-ZE.

Whether the F25M-R can handle the increased BHP and torque of the FS-ZE engine is a question I can't answer.

        Comparisons
        1.8 L FP-DE engine: 122 BHP @ 6000 rpm; 120 lbs/ft torque @ 4000 rpm

        2.0 L FS-DE engine: 130 BHP @6000 rpm; 135 lbs/ft torque @ 4000 rpm

        2.0 L FS-ZE engine: 163-168 BHP @ 6800 rpm; 128-131 lbs/ft torque @ 5000 rpm (depending on year)

The F-series won't break instantaneously but it's definitely not as strong as the G-series

In that case can anyone tell me what cars I should be looking at pulling a G series from of point me towards an online resource that would have some info on potential donor cars?

All 2001-2003 manual transmission Proteges with the 2.0 L FS-DE or FS-DET engines. This includes the MP3, the sedans, the P5 and the turbo. All have the G-series transmission.

You should also be able to use the transmission from earlier generation cars with the FS engine such as the 626, MX6, and Ford Probe.

I highly recommend the MFactory helical differential for the G-series. All FS g-series will take the 28 spline version.

Bear in mind that you will also need CV axles and a clutch to match the transmission. If your replacement engine came from a 5 speed car it should have the right flywheel (and clutch, if it's good enough to re-use). If not you will need an FS flywheel too.

I have some worn Syncros in my G15M-R at 210,000kms with a lightly modified FS-DE. You have to wait just that little extra when shifting so it doesn't clash. This is with synthetic fluid changed at 100,000km and again at 200,000kms. I highly doubt that the older transmission would fail unless you were flat foot shifting or doing lots of burnouts/ hard launches. I drive my car very hard except for launches. If you are drag racing the car or doing hard launches/ burnouts, I'd make sure you have the stronger transmission. Considering you're looking for a LSD I'm guessing you are looking to put the power down hard and fast at low speed.

                    Thanks again Goldstar.

Therieldeal, thanks for the recommendation on the MFactory helical I was thinking about going that direction, how may miles do you have on yours? The FS-ZE came out of an automatic so i'm planing on using a Fidanza 7.5lb flywheel.

Which brings me to my next topic, my parts list (potential)

ACT HD Street Clutch P/N Z66-HDSS (cheaper recommendations welcome)

                    G15M-R transmission
                    Streetunit billet Engine Mount Set
                    Axels? any recommendations

cartracer12, The biggest thing I am looking for with the LDS is better traction on snow and dirt. I'm bulding the car out as a rally/daily driver. I split my time between CO and AZ, I also get pulled over a lot less on dirt!

As far as axles go... no need to use anything more than stock axles. The only time I've ever broken an axle has been with wheel hop in boost in 2nd gear... probably ~250+ ft lbs of torque.

Clutches... I miss my ACT HD clutch w/ organic disc, I highly recommend it. Worked great for me at around 275 ft lbs of torque (never slipped) and had stock drive ability (albeit with a heavier pedal).

I've actually never run an MFactory LSD, but i helped them organize the original group buy and helped them with R&D/fitment/etc. Having owned two Quaife diffs and handled several MFactory units i can say the quality (at least visually and fitment-wise) is similar, for half the price. The design is the same as the ones they make for Hondas, just with the dimensions adapted to fit the mazda transmission. They are very popular with the Honda guys, and MFactory even makes some OEM parts for Honda of America these days. http://jdm.teammfactory.com/about-us_profile

Yeah I used to live in Northern BC so I can see how it would be nice to get an LSD for snow/dirt. I think I'll eventually step up to a LSD but not until I have quite a bit more than 110bhp. That is unless the one tire fire on wet pavement gets to be too frustrating.

You could upgrade to the 24 mm axles used in the MSP with the FS-DET engine but they are probably not necessary in a non-turbo car.

Th FS-ZE (168hp) has the same rated HP output as the FS-DET. Plus I'm pulling the cat, putting a header/ 2.5 inch exhaust and a 7.5lbs flywheel, so at the end of the day I'm hoping it will be putting 35ish more HP to the ground then a stock DET (or ZE). Do you think the stock axels are going to reliably handle the stress or go with the MSP axles?
