    Bpt tdc wtf

    trying to get TDC on a Bpt.

    theres an I and E on each cam

    I put the I on the intake cam up
    and the E on the exhaust cam up.

    didnt start.

    i had the two lines pointed inwards to each other and i thought it was running good. just no bottom end to it.

      the lines point up, theres lines to match them to on the timing cover plate, behind the gears...

        there is more to tdc than the cams lined up ..

        1. #1 piston on top of it's travel
        2. both exhaust and intake valves for cylinder #1 closed


        there are 2 times through a cycle that the #1 piston will be at the top . the compression and the exhaust cycles TDC is the compression cycle. it could be you have set the cam timing to the exhaust cycle .

          ok ... but to put the belt on correctly, line up the cams to the marks on the plate, line up the mark on the crank timing gear to the oil pump mark...

            yeah i knew that other stuff from working on Hondas.
            but those single cam are easy. and only 1 line.

              okay tried to set the cams again.
              started it and it wont idle.

              heres what the cams look like




              #1 piston is a TDC.
              where are the marks on the crank pulley?
              theres alot of rust on mine and i cant see.


              When i set it last time i put the 2 line facing inwards to each other.
              idles and drives fine. but no power due to very bad timing.

                you got the lower cover off? i just take a flash light and look down from the top , if its still on, and theres a notch on the lower timing gear which lines up to a mark on the oil pump, facing up. ill find a pic for you, im bored anyways...lol...

                      did exactly as the pick showed and now it doesn't even catch.

                      another way to get tdc without using the cam marks?
                      there obviously not working.

                        Make sure the dowel pin on the camshaft is in the correct slot on the cam gear.

                              What did you mean by that last post ?
                              In pretty sure the guy before did something to eff up these cam gears.

                              If I take the valve cover off is there anyway I can see if the cams are set to tdc?
