GTX trans or diff failure ?

We were spectating the 2014 Pacific Forest Rally last weekend and had a driveline problem occur. Coming into a corner at speed , I downshifted from 5th to 4th and the trans behaved as if it was in neutral ; no relation to engine revs. I clutched in and out a few times , scrubbed more speed and dropped it into 2nd and the car drove fine until parked. After leaving stage , pulled onto road , began accelerating 1 , 2 ,3rd then into 4th and it was like nuetral again , no relation to the engine. Tried 5th , back to 4th and it grabbed and I started to go and then heard a loud bang through the floor. Now I had no power delivery in any gear. Coasted to a stop , tried clutch (feels fine) , shifts into all gears (including reverse) ok but car does not move. Visual inspection shows all looks normal underneath (no oil , parts , shrapnel etc). Tried diff lock too (mine works) and nothing. Car went back to town on the hook.... what thoughts do you fellow members have.
I am thinking possibly center diff ? Any advice much appreciated....
    thanks

Probable centerdiff. 2 cents in a bet says there are chunks in the gearlube. The only wrinkle is the whole lost a couple gears first, but in any case centerdiff is done and probaly the rest of the box has taken permanent siesta as well...

Yeah it was pretty strange how it was temporary and then fixed itself twice before I had total failure (bang). One thought though is I had just installed new front axles/CV's the week prior . Any likelihood the axle disengaged or failed and thus engine runs but no driving ? Car has 199km (about 125k miles) on it now if that helps any.

Prolly not. They can't disengage witbout something else going quite wrong... say like a wheel falling off. It is just barely possible that the trans is still alive but the rear diff is fragged but what you describe is prettymuch the dowelpin in the centerdiff falling out of place followed by grenade.

OK , so what are my options now ? I am guessing parts are un-obtainium , the car is turn key and has been well maintained (just spent $800 on tires and front end 3 weeks ago). Sell it whole , parts or it goes to scrap ??? Seems like such a waste .... I've had it for around 5 years and have really enjoyed it . I don't really need it as a DD as I have two other cars but I sure would like to keep it going .

There's another gearbox out there somewhere... If nothing else get a fwd box just to keep it eunning while ya search.

Update , repair shop in town puts car on hoist and says RF CV axle had dis-engaged ? They re-installed and car drives now ?
How can the loss of power to one wheel on a full time all wheel drive car render it dead ? How come it would not move with diff lock engaged ? I am happy it was a easy fix compared to trans failure but I am baffled . Thoughts ?

It can't have. only if the joint broke internally. And at thag point with an open cront diff all power goes to that side and the car no goes.

Just to update ; had it towed to nearest shop where they re-installed RF CV axle , apparently it had come out of the half-shaft ? Anyways spent the weekend driving it about 250 miles home and it seems to drive fine ! I am happy again .....
