    Clutch interlock switch?

Sometimes when attempting to start the BF wagon I have to turn the key multiple times before the starter engages. All the lights come one it just takes a bit of effort to get the car to start cranking. Furthermore the car can start in gear and without the clutch pressed in. I see a little hack job wiring has occured under the steering column so I'm pretty sure the PO bypassed something.. Where should I start? What should I be looking for?

Either bypass the starter switch with a relay and a push button....or buy a new ignition switch

So you don't think it's the neutral safety switch you think it's the ignition switch?

I know it is...all too common. All 3 of my 323's are bypassed to a push button.

Most likely the starter switch, as azgtx said. It happens to everyone sooner or later.
