Speedometer and odometer quit on 1988 323 hatchback

After searching and reading I am guessing that the cable or drive gear are hosed. Any suggestions for the job? I guess I'll pull the gear end first and spin the cable if the gear looks good to check the speedo.

I hate working under the dashboard of a car. Is there an easy way to get to the cable on the back of the cluster? Is the cable clipped to the cluster?

Any junkyard donors for used parts? If I need new I ordered from Arlington Mazda and Jim Ellis previously. Any better suggestions?

Can I replace the inner cable if that is the problem?

Car is still running good, it is a daily driver now. Idle not perfect on a warm start. Gearing pretty low, could use sixth gear.

the cable is a slip fit with a press clip on it. really easy to undo.
I suggest posting a WTB add for a new cable. (after you inspect for the problem)

It's likely the lower cable under the hood.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still waiting for my better half to park it long enough to take a look at it. She really likes this car.
