Nissan's unveiled the world's first fly-by-wire steering system, completely eliminating the mechanical connection between the wheel in your hands and the wheels on the road. Although the automaker insists the system will enhance the driving experience, it's also a big step toward a fully autonomous vehicle.
Here. It looks like the mechanical linkage will still be present, but it won't connect the steering wheel and steering rack directly unless the electronic system fails and a clutch is engaged. Sounds like a waste of time, money and effort for something that won't completely eliminate its mechanical predecessor and just adds to the growing list of electronic system with the potential to fail.

Wow that is stupid. I love how they always say these things will give a "better driving experience" Maybe for people that are inexperienced or like to play on their phones instead of driving.
Add this to the list of things that make driving a worse experience:
1: Fly by wire throttle
2: Electric power steering
3: Fly by wire steering
