Eh? My 150k BF with its 1.6 SOHC motor passed 5x cleaner then when i got it with 107k. Why? Because i replaced the cat with a new one! So whoever told you that bs is a complete moron that should stop letting his imagination do his speaking for him!

PS: I'm betting the real reason that it may have "problems" is because the emission limits are lower on the cars and thus its harder to pass especially if it has a major problem including a bad cat!

The emission had somehtig to do with the sohc escort motor over the 1.8 dohc motor. The dohc motor tends to not pass as easilly here when they get older, not just from cat but other things. ( i just fully retard the timing and i pass). PLus this guy was a temp tech, my actuall tech closed shop or go tout of it (to much bs).

But hte 1.9 ytake care of it, and well it also does get better gas milage.

I've beat the piss out of my 1.9 daily for the past year with no problems. It's only now starting to stumble sometimes when coming to a stop but I have no clue why, I think shifting into 2nd at 25mph every time I take off is getting to the engine. It's definately obvious that there is a lack of horsepower but if you have a heavy foot it's not so bad. And as people have been saying the 2.0 SPI from newer Escorts is a simple drop in swap, all that needs to be done is wire in an RPM switch to open the butterflys in the intake manifold(very similar to VICS). That engine is good for 110hp and 115ft/lbs.
