    Any idea of the mileage?

    Any oil leaks?

If all looks well, I'd use conventional for the first interval, and depending on how that goes, maybe switch to synthetic.

Engine looks tight as far as leaks go. Ill run a decent cheaper oil through the first time to get a good look at possible leaks. Im not much of a synthetic man never have been. What really is the advantage of a synthetic??? I have never had any problems running non synthetic oils. Im not gonna be pushing this engine to its limits or winding it out on a daily basis or doing anything stupid. I just plan on driving it mildly to and from work for right now with the occasional highway driving and some to the speed limit racing. So with all that being said is synthetic really necessary??

it gives you better protection in extreme conditions... high heat and whatnot. plus it maintains its viscosity a lot longer.

You forgot the but. BUT if the motor has semi high mileage and wasn't on synthetic most of its life then the oil seals MAY start leaking from the synthetic basically cleaning out the dino oils residues that sealed those seals!

It sounds like conventional oil will suit you just fine.

What kind of oil do you usually use?

It usually depends on the vehicle. In my Ranger I always ran Valvoline 5w30. In my 78 Power wagon i run high mileage Castrol 10w40. The oil I put in the Escort right before it blew up (not even 300 miles) was Valvoline 10w30 synthetic blend. On some vehicles I have run Castrol GTX.

i used to run castrol GTX in my 91 egt... it smoked a lot, especially on startup. i switched to regular valvoline and the problem went away *shrug*. so i stick with that now, and would reccomend it.

as far as synthetic, i would never use a blend... at least go for a full synthetic. my dad bought a VW passat turbo diesel from the original owner with 310k miles... which has always been run on mobil one. it runs perfect... better than my escort. when we pulled the oil pan and valvecover to do the gaskets, it was sparkling clean inside... cleaner than my 50k gtr motor is. so although its "cheap" synthetic... it seems to work just fine

Right now I am on hold until I find the right part to link the manual steering rack to my steering column. The power rack had a d shaped shaft coming out of it but the new manual rack has a star shaped shaft coming out of it. I need to find the star shaped universal joint that goes on the end of the steering column to fix this.

Yeah I have already been to all the yards there are no and I mean no Ponys to speak of. I didnt know if the 323 part would work. Hopefully there are a few 323s left in the yard. I have kind of been on hold anyways with family being down for the holidays. I go back to work here in a few hours. Hopefully I dont work too late that way I can wake up in the morning and hit the yards before I go to work tomorrow. Thanks for the tip on the 323 part.

i think it will work.... but i couldnt tell you from first hand experience. i know the 323 manual rack one is different from the power rack... because ryan had this exact opposite problem when he switched from his stock manual rack to a power-rack that was converted to manual.
