There is also the fairly rare Escort LX-E that he could be thinking of. It is a 4-door Escort with the 1.8. Fords version of the LTS. I do prefer the four doors over the two.

Don't quote me or anything, but the only thing that I know that is different between the two engines, is the TPS. So, assuming you swap your old one on, it should be a straight swap.

yeah, the tps is 4 wire on autos, 3 wire on manuals (BPTs are 4 wire, but that doesn't apply here).
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

Yeah...not going to happen. With 2k you can boost it and have that power plus a lot more depending on a lot of factors.

you could do 150whp for under $2000, but that's absolute best. ITBs (independent throttle bodies, like a motorcycle) would be the way to go, as you know you're going for 5-7 grand, so you can tune the ITBs and runner length for maximum power there. Fresh rebuild right?

This is worst case, IE rebuilding yours, not buying the other one.
                List time:
                new pistons/rings overbored 1.5mm (I think is max): $450 10:1 compression
rod or rods?: Chris has some, I think he wants $30-40
you'll want the better crank, as you have the small nose: $40
bearings to match it all: $60 ACL on ebay
                Block bored, hottanked, honed: $25/cylinder, $35 for cleaning= $135
MBSP=main bearing support plate, fords don't have them, only mazdas: $30-50
                Pan hottanked: $35
New oil pump: $80 ?? I can't remember, rough guess
                New water pump: $55
                full gasket kit: $70
                Lightweight flywheel: $400

Head work: this is tricky, you can spend A LOT here. so, here it all is:
Head port and polish, 3-angle valve, oversized: $100-150 depending on machinist
                Oversized SS valves: $200-300
                Stiffer springs: $200-250
                valve guides: $40
Solid lifters: can you find a junked 1.8 miata? $50 If not, $150-250
Miata cams to match lifters: junker, $50-100. otherwise $150-200
Corksport has agressive cams for $585, another options.

                Intake Path One:
"Cut" intake manifold, $75-150 cost of a port/polish + metal removal. its a secret
ebay intake piping and filter: $40
Playing with your MAF: $Free!!! (ask about this, its pretty easy)

                Intake Path Two:
ITBs: $100-200 depending what you get
custom intake runners for ITBs: $250-600
Stand alone computer: $200-400 (thinking Megasquirt)
This is getting expensive fast, so we're dropping ITBs for now.....haha

Okay, not including a few minor things, plugs & wires, disty, belts; that is a fairly comprehensive list of what you can do to the motor and car. You could use the F-series tranny for a higher topend, at the risk of breaking gears. That's all I got, my brain hurts now.

talk to bpt323 or martiniac. we have some wihandyman.com stickers, I'm willing to bet we can get the name on your car.

                          Here is my advice:

                          pacesetter 4-1 header
                          straight 2.5" exhaust
                          18 degrees timing
                          cone filter and RX7 VAF
                          megasquirt
                          exhintake cam and adjustable gears
                          miata pistons
                          head work

That should get you between 150-170whp and cost ~2000 depending on what you do, where you get the parts, and how many times you dyno it.
