what happened was.....i bought a 91 egt completely n/a for circle track dirt racing. everything is was working great. second gear would have me hitting about 7300-7600 right as i had to let off for the turn. well the last race of the year my fan never kicked on(still factory plug. not on a switch) car got hot and last two laps i couldnt even hit 5000rpm.total loss of power. when i pulled off the track it died. the next day after it had cool i checked and oil had blew out from the plastic fill cap. lost about 2 quarts. i put oil and fresh water in and car started fine but now it has a tick. the tick speeds up as you give it gas. the pedal feels like it still has its power but im not sure what the tick is all about. so im going to replace the motor sometime before marchsigpic

ticking is likely the hydraulic lash adjusters (HLAs), they do that when low on oil (I thing there's no harm, just a loss of performance from the valves not opening fully). It will likely go away after a bit of run time with the oil topped up. They can be removed and rebuilt if they keep doing that after an hour or so of running. BG makes a valvetrain cleaner that can help if the problem continues and you don't want to remove and rebuild them.Last edited by cojsl; 01-05-2008, 06:50 PM.2003 Protege5
