Why does it not surprise me that the 95 Protege, being made in Japan, has it and the American Continent made Escort/Tracer doesn't.

It has nothing to do with where the car was made and everything to do with production run timing and cost effectiveness. The 95 protege was the first year of that model's production run. It made perfect sense to incorporate the OBD II system into that car since it was federally mandated for the following year. The 95 escort was the second to last year of that models production run. It made zero sense to make it OBD II compliant since it wasn't required and the car was already into it's 4th year of production. On the other hand; as early as 1994, the V6 Ford Mustang was OBD II. That particular engine/electronics combo remaind the same untill 1998. Now the 94 and 95 5.0 V8 mustangs remained OBD I. Then in 96 ford went to the new Modular 4.6 engines with new electronics with OBD II. There are many other examples similar to this.

Agreed, on that point. The production run & cost effectiveness sucked. Otherwise, they would have had the OBDII in there. Kind of proves my point.

I disagree. You're saying it doesn't make sense to make a car in its 4th year in production yet in 96, it's last year in production, it made sense to put it in that one? And, solely because it was then mandated? For that you start with the 95's since you're going to be forced to put it in your 96 model year. Since Ford are part owners in Mazda they knew how that works out. Another thing to disprove the theory is that my dad's 95 Altima also has OBDII and it was already the 3rd year in production and had only 2 more years on that generation of that model. I'm glad they put it there too. It has been a help on both the 95 Protege I owned and the Altima.

Yes, I heard of that. Other cars got it in 94 and I can't recall which but it's only a handful and the OBDII is very untrustworthy for the 94's but still useful in some diagnosing situations.. The thing is it's as if they couldn't afford to do this with all their cars and keep costs low. That proves you correct again on the production run timing and cost control.

Don't get me wrong. I owned a 98 Escort station wagon like yours and loved it until my wife crashed it. It still ran but there were problems and wasn't worth the repairs. She now drives a 99 Mercury Tracer. For non-Ford drivers, it's the same car as the Ford Escort(same engine, transmission & all).

          Air Bags question??

When replacing the Airbags, what other components need replaced, say if I choose to refurb this car for road use!

          I have the bags.

The 1.9 will run forever, the auto tranny will not (but it will come close if maintained). The BP will not bolt up to that tranmission. If you decide to part it I'd be interested in the steering wheel if it's in perfect condition.
now the question is, what will the cost be to put the Trio on the frame rack to repair the damaged frame in front of the driver Wheel? $75. Hr. Min 2 hrs. This car was totalled by the previous owners ins.

Maybe because of the frame issue, but how without removing the damaged parts as I did?

I always use the easy way of pulling a frame! Tree a chain welded to the area you need pulled! toss that baby is reverse and slam it! LOL I wouldn't actually recommend this but we have done it a few times when we needed to! We actually got my front end straight and good on my black car with this method!
