Check all the harnesses. They are old and the insulation can crack
causing wires to touch and short.
This may be the only problem you have to solve.

Make sure your spark plug wires are plugged into the correct sockets in the distributor cap.
If you are off by one plug you won't be igniting the right cylinder.

Try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes and then reconnect it.
Turn the key again and check for the Check Engine Light.
If it still won't light you're going to have to pull the cluster
    to change out the bulb.
Without a good bulb, the engine won't start.

Did you swap the ECUs ?
You really should not have to if both engines ran prior to the engine swap.
Just make sure that all of the sensors are connected,
the distributor is connected, and all ground straps are securly in place.

Worst thing you may have to do is swap distributors to match the ECUs.
Make sure you mark where the rotor points to
    before pulling out each distributor.

Intake hose and Mass Air Flow HAVE TO BE CONNECTED for the engine to start also.

Let us know how far you get...

they're both '91. the donor car is an automatic as well. we swapped over the manual's throttle body because of the 3 wire tps

also, thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.. I didn't get the opportunity to work on things today, but I'll give all that stuff a try tomorrow after I get home from work

well what i neglected to mention is that my friend who doesn't know his own strength, ripped the nipple out of the heater core trying to take one of the old hoses off. i discovered just now that apparently coolant leaked all over the ecu... i've got the ecu out and all the connectors in the area unplugged so they can dry out. i've got the ecu from the other car, but it's an auto... are the ecus for an auto and manual different on a '91? the connectors are the same.

na plug the other one in, alot of the early cars used the same harness, the later auto cars had the auto ecu stuff in the same harness..... basically ones a 3 plug(auto) and 2 plug(stick)

ok so if it plugs up it works then? i'm gonna run and get some electric contact cleaner in the morning and spray all those harness connectors.. hopefully this will get it

here's some more stuff to think about... I pulled the cluster today and tested the pins for the CEL. I get +12V on one (the one that goes over to the other lights) so I assume this is vref for the lights, but I get +5V on the other... Not sure what that's all about. When I put a meter across them I get 1.something... Here's a pic:

(btw this is with the ecu from the auto plugged in and the key on)

sounds like a fuse to me no fuel, no cel, ecu got wet fried the fuse or the ecu.

well that's what I was thinking... I checked all the fuses and they're all good. Unless there are any fuses besides the ones in the engine bay and the ones in the cabin box. If there are others I'd love to know... Otherwise I"m going to be checking all the wires in the harness when I get a chance. Just have to print out a list of what all the pins do.

no, working on it today though. all 3 of the ECUs I have will power up and light the CEL in the donor car, so I've swapped the engine harness from that car but so far still no CEL... I'm taking a break right now, but I'm going to go back out in a little while and change the dash harness and see what that does. I'm about the burn the thing to the ground though >
