yo dudes, been having this problem with my little sister's car and I'm sick of it.
99 Escort wagon, auto, 89k (I think). started off as a problem where the car wouldn't start for a few tries, but if you turned the key to on for a few seconds like a diesel it would fire right up. changed the fuel filter and pump, seemed okay. not long after, I get a complaint that it's doing it again and now it idles weird and there's a CEL. pull a #1 misfire code, replace plugs/wires and clear code, idle is fine and CEL goes away. now if you try to start the car, it'll crank forever but won't fire unless the gas pedal is held to the floor. air filter is clean/recent, and tried starting it open MAF- no difference. took the IAC off and sprayed it out with throttle body cleaner (it didn't look super dirty or anything to start with, but w/e), no difference. from a google search, it seems like IAC and ECT sensors are the usual culprits, but I'd prefer to not just throw parts at this thing.
what am I missing here?
