talked to rob this morning. no progress of putting the trans on the motor. there's been a whole schlew of scares with the baby. the due date was prolonged however so...
he was going to work on it after we got off the phone. we'll be in contact via phone over the next couple days
took mon, tues and wed off to deal with projects (this one and the house), rolled my ankle on tuesday and got 2 more days off. I am caught up enough at home that i can give this almost all of my attention now. was up til 1 am assembling last night. stopped when it came time to make noise. All I have left is to tighten the shaft nuts outside 5th gear and glue the sidepan on.
Tonight the plan is to hopefully get the other engine and tranny all the way out, and get my engine and tranny out of my basement (somewhat a project in itself as far as the engine goes).
I took apart 3 Htype trannies (1 LX and 2 GT). I found that all the boxes are shimmed exactly the same. Gear shafts have 1 flat .020 and 1 spring (conical) .032. The diffs have just one at .013. I went with more bearing preload on the diff and used 2 .013 shims which gave me about 20 in.lbs. of torque. Its somewhat stiff, but rolls real niiiiice! The assembly of this tranny would've happened in about 2 hours if I didnt spend so much time analyzing everything.
careful with those shims, too tight and you'll trash your bearings right quick

what is your opinion on 20 inch lbs (initial breakaway torque is 35)? i got almost no resistance with 1 shim. 91 Ford Probe service manual said I can use up to 2 shims regardless of the thickness and their stock rating is 4.3 in.lbs. A bud of mine came over and examined it and said that it felt good (spinning the diff by hand with no shafts in the box, using a stub made from a cut down intermediate shaft) and that I was good under 35 in.lbs. Gavin's post on MX6.com (concerning installing his Guru diff) said 17- 34 IIRC.
I plan on building a new box sometime in the next year and am not against having to replace bearings as I might get new ones anyway for the new box.
I will pm my number to you. if you feel strongly enough that I should remove some shim, give me a ring. I'm not against ripping it apart and putting it back together again. Weather just got ****ty here, so I doubt I'll be able to work outside tonight, but I could have it apart and back together by the end of the night.
Earlier in the week, I had hoped to have installed by yesterday, but I havent been able to make it home before 7, so the plan is Sat nite after work i get started and finish her up on sunday. i will hopefully have a bud helping me who used to be one of my bosses, and has a non turbo probe. we're trading his labor for parts to get him turboed.
i am hoping to get to the track on wednesday, but i'm not sure if i'll get past tech with an open DP (not to mention i dont want my boost going crazy). Hopefully my bro in law will weld my new DP to the old exhaust mon or tues nite!!!
engine, tranny, turbo assembly is sitting in the engine bay with one mount hooked up and resting on the frame. I won't be able to work on it tonite because i have to sand and redo my daughter's floor so the room is ready for her on Friday (getting induced). The hard part is done.
I need a couple things. Some dumbass rammed a vj11 oil feed fitting into my t3, so when I tightened my line it spun. Threads in the turbo are fine. I need a 10x1.0 for inside the turbo and what looks like a 3/8 npt on top. Couple other things too, but that is the hard one. Too burnt to think right now. I'll post some pics when I get a chance. bpt323, feel free to post the ones I sent you if itspossible.
Or is there anyone with a vehicle/engine actually ready, just to pop this LSD in and test it? It has been 6 months now since the prototype was finished and shipped out
