    A mechanical Riddle

My daughters 07 Kia Rio only has 29,550 miles on it and has had one long block replacement, one short block, and another long block. It continues to burn oil for some reason but the dealership can't seem to figure out why. I know it's coming out the exhaust because I can see the blue smoke, and it's been checked for leaks several times but nothing is ever found.

I have one vote for PCV valve. Anyone else?

It's all been warranty work so it hasn't cost us a dime. It's pretty silly though. The first motor threw a rod and from then on, it's been burning about a quart of oil every thousand miles, regardless. Short block, long block, what ever.

We just got it back last week and it looks like its burning oil again. It's still too early to tell but I have no reason to think it's fixed.

It could be the PCV, though I doubt the dealer would have put 3 engines in it if it was that simple. Give it a shot, though. Those things are cheap enough. Honestly, to me, it sounds like poorly rebuilt engines. We've had the same problem at my shop. Quite a lot of the engines we get have been remanufactured in China, and their QC standards aren't that great. You might want to try and weasel a new long block out of them, see if that doesn't help. Or buy a Honda.

Kind of odd, though, that you're having this problem. Hyundai/Kia have been on a roll for the last few years, and their engines seemed to be pretty reliable. It's strange for pretty much any car to be using that much oil with under 30k on the clock. Good thing it's got that 7 year powertrain warranty, eh?

I don't know very much about the lemon law and hadn't even thought about it. This thread will definitely take me in an unforeseen direction. Cool stuff.

Lemon law basically states that if you purchase a car and the same problem occurs 3 times its considered a lemon and the seller has to refund your money(I think)/take it back

                The problem is this >>>>>KIA<<<<<<<
What good is the warranty work if the car is still having problems? Lemon law and give them the car back.

Kia Rio's are junk, The ones before the 06 change have/had severe problems with timing belts breaking before the service interval or right on it. I have one at my house right now that is a 05, has 58K- 60K on it (cant remember) and broke the timing belt. The head is junk and the pistons are junk. It embedded the valves in them both, and this is very common actually. To top it off a used head is expensive, and a rebuilt is even more, then you have to buy an engine rebuild kit and get some pistons, $$$$$$$. Or why not get a used low mileage motor you may ask? well cause they want a premium for those and they go for no less then $1200. They should send them all back to Korea and use them as a giant Kia Rio border fence between the north and south.

One caveat: it has to have the same problem 3 times in one year that didn't get resolved. Which I think applies to your car. So, I'd have to agree with Turpro on this one. If the thing's giving you this much trouble, get rid of it. And, while I do tend to agree with 300zx, I still say it's a bit odd. Hyundais and Kias from the past few years have been solid cars on the whole. Quality-wise they're right up with the Japanese. I know several people with one or the other, and they've never had a lick of problems. Guess they can't all be perfect, though.

I'm really disappointed that we're having this much trouble with the car. I like it because it's just a basic car without a lot of bells and whistles to inflate the price. It's perfect for an entry level income, something which Mitsu dealers and a few others don't seem to be sensitive to.

I'm corresponding with another guy that's making an air tight case for the PCV valve. It's a bit of a value conflict for me since I probably have the ability to fix this POS for under 10 bucks. If I just let things run their course, I might be able to get them to replace the whole car with a new one for free. I'm sure I'll do the right thing by my daughter, in fact I'm sure of it.

Honestly if you are looking for a cheap new car look at nissan Versa's. I drove a base model with a 6 speed manual in it the other day and it was a pretty nice car for 11k OTD brand new in 08
