The other day I installed a pair of upper balljoints. Refreshing to install parts that were, yaknow, OEM, and just... bolt up, instead making stuff and forcing it to fit. Man, that gearbox swap project on the rallykar left a mark...

'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

Raised the 240 1/4 inch in the rear. I was shooting for 1/2 but I miscalculated collar turns.
Did a once over of the wiring by the fuse box. New grounds, routed better, and fuse box now has the plastic bottom. I have the cover somewhere I need to dig out.
Negative terminal doesn't get alarmingly hot anymore.
The Digital cluster works now, but only when the city lights or headlights are on.
It's really weird, I think I didn't fix the timing box properly enough. I'm not going to bother pulling that bastard again until I go to get it inspected. I may just put the analog cluster on or jumper the dash lights so they come on when the cars running. I'd say I don't want the bulbs to run all the time but the car will mostly be run at night so it doesn't really matter.
Rear end alignment is really botched right now. On side toes out and one side toes in. Combined that with the one new front tension rod and oem BTFO one it's a real handful right now.
It still handles better than it ever did with the 26 year old parts.
I've sorted the idle issue and I no longer have the throttle close set screw maxed out to get it to run cold/hot.
Need to order some JDM unobtonium LSD gear oil and those stupid seat-belt bolts at some point. Probably Q1 of next year.
I've also been working on a isuzu 3.9L diesel that's been neglected. So far the most glaring was it had 5 butt splices on one of the sensor wires. It also had a healthy amount of mud in the coolant system.
Thanks for rotating the picture internet.Beater=/= Sleeper

Picked up an 86 AW11 for dirt cheap... Body/interior are great. Engine is seized and everything plastic under hood is melted/dripping. I guess midship water-cooled engines don't appreciate running air-cooled for too many months. The previous owner (pretty OLD) had no clue the upper water hose was not connected to anything and there was zero coolant in the engine, brought it to my shop when the engine seized and couldn't believe that running it like this could have caused so much damage. Needless to say, no scrap yards locally want the car, and his bill was $140 to diag the issue and document the damage for an estimate... so for $140 I have a low mile Light beige AW11 that needs something dumb and dirt cheap to power it around. Contemplated a BPT/holset jam and adapter plate, but I am most likely to settle for a KL swap because...Current:

Haha, they're surely cool, but meh... I need more than just a bolt-in swap. Light vehicles and KLs go together nicely, plus I have all of it hanging around. I really just need a decent fabrication and wiring project to keep me occupied. One that will cost next to nothing out of pocket, as we're no longer living the DINK lifestyle.Current:

Sold the wagon about a year ago-ish... to my brother, and I sold the zx2 when my son was born in october. too many escorts. End game is to buy THE orange SVT Focus wagon (the one w/the 2.3 and all the cosworth goodies) It'll be up for sale again next fall. Depending on which ones I like the most out of my current stable, the rest will be sold to get the Focus come that time... Really the SVT contour will be sold unless the 3.0 swap is totally to die for, at which point the 5 door may leave. Then it's between the MR2 and the NB, which one will stay/go... too many similar cars. and 2 seaters kinda suck now except for track-days/auto-x. The Mazda5 is a great car, but kinda sucks to take dogs and the boy anywhere together. Focus wagon will be perfect with more hatch space for dogs, but boring unless THE orange one.Last edited by CODY004WD; 12-28-2015, 01:48 AM.Current:

The hell do you have against watercooled turbos?
240sx update
Almost got the battery tray welded in proper, managed to trash the cheapo gas-less mig I was using and couldn't finish up. Also got the seat-belts mounted a bit more proper and waiting for my last round of bolts to come in so it can be not held in by cheese grade bolts.
The combo of manual belts and the GTST seats is really impressive, to compare it feels huggier than mx3 seats and manual belts but doesn't feel like sitting on cinder blocks like the MX3 seats. I wish I had all the adjustments the passenger side had on the drivers, but muh JDM tyte.
Attempted to raise the rear half an inch and managed to move it up all of 3mm.
Still haven't replaced that blown yet seized front traction arm. I hope replacing it fixes the wonky steering issue I'm having. The bent tie rods aren't helping I'm sure.
The digital speedo now works 100% when the parking/headlights are switched on. It works 0% when they are off. There are too many things this particular issue could be that I don't even care to fix it.Beater=/= Sleeper

they're a pain in the ass and add complexity to a car that I'm trying to keep simple and reliable because it gets driven to the track. not saying they don't have their place, but they're not for me (or, more specifically, this car)sigpic

**** box is almost looking like a car now. Most of the lights work even. Still too low though.
I need to fix the cable releases so I stop having to look like a hobo when I get gas and can put the trunk trim back in.
Fixed my fuel issue, well most of it anyway. With the rear seat out I could hear the fuel pump cutting out when hooning about. Turns out Chassis harness was thoroughly worked over and full of goop. Cleaned it out, and tightened the pins. All sorts of jiggling doesn't open it now. Now if I could get the fuel pump relay to work instead of having to jumper it I'd be squared away there.
Tightened the reel spring tension on the drivers side belt. If anything it's a bit too fast now. Beats slamming the damn door on it.
Lost one of the spacers for the pivot point so the passenger side is now removed. I might spruce that one up while it's out.
Cluster fully died again. This time it looks like a few diodes on the flexible circuit. Eventually I'll have replaced every problem component and it still won't work right.Beater=/= Sleeper
