    z0mg cool looking guitar

so my dad put this idea in my head last night...

he has a bunch of OLD (like 200 years old) wormy american chestnut, from various floors/posts/etc. that he has collected over the years. i was talking about making a guitar, he mentioned that chestnut would probably look pretty cool. so i poked around on the web, and found this custom made les paul:

Z0MG! that looks so fkn sweet!

he doesnt have any pieces large/thick enough to do a solid guitar body, so i was thinking i could plane like 1/2" off the top of an existing body and make a chestnut top. much like how les paul standards have a carved maple top over mahogany.

now here is the question... do i do this to a Les Paul, or a Telecaster? Either way its going to have a bolt on neck, so it wont be like a REAL les paul... just wondering which one you all think will look better with this sweet antique top.

Les paul ftw. That al wood deal looks tits.

How about taking baords and glueing them side by side then clamping them to make 1 big piece then design it?

well the other problem is that getting all the dimensions just right will be quite tough if i'm building the body 100% from scratch. if i'm just making a new top, i'll have all the important dimensions there already.

Actually, neither. If you're going to build something, build something weird, like an Ovation Breadwinner, Ibanez Talman, or a Danelectro U2...

the breadwinner is f'in freaky looking. interesting though.

the talman looks like a jaguar got it on with a tele... very neat.

              dano's.... cant stand the things.

i wouldnt want to do any of those though...i need something that i can buy either a kit or a cheap copy of. i'm not going to buy a $300 guitar and shave half an inch off the top.. lol

I love my Breadwinner. I need to fix the electronics, though... 70s active pickups and no wiring diagrams worth a damn make that kind of hard. Someday I'll put it back together.

Holy balls, just looked them up on eBay... I had no idea they were worth that much, it might be worth paying someone to fix it :o

That is a ****ing TERRIBLE idea.

                          I wish it worked, they're such a weird-sounding guitar.

haha, i know. i could never do that. hell, i'm nervous about refinishing my '72 SG (that has already been refinished before).

wierd sounding how? do they compare to anything "normal"?

                              how about this...

i could buy a standard "build a tele" kit... but since i'm redoing the top i can easily redo the routes/bridge setup/etc.... and make it like an HH thinline without the semi-hollow body =o
