Guy had one at an autocross a couple years ago. I enjoyed it because of its rarity, but It didn't impress me performance-wise.
I doubt the gearbox is stronger, with only a 2000lb car, they wouldn't have needed to make it so.
There's a Pontiac (Bonneville or Grand Prix, I can't remember now) SE AWD sitting in town, too. I think that would make a fun ice-racing car. Especially with a Northstar swap.

AKA the more popular in the US but still rare, Geo Storm. These wieghed 2732 lbs when AWD/turbo so the ad is wrong about that but true about only being around 800 Impulse's imported to the US and only in awd/turbo during 1991.
