    no susbstitute for displacement

But when you combine cubic displacement with cubic money and cubic redneck insanity, you get this:

    Bwwwwaaaaaa-hahahahahaha
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

        Apparently displacement is "only" 28L

That's an insane project. It must be fun to have the funds to do things that make no sense.

Funny, and impressive, but not quite what it seems. Unlike gasoline engines, all two-stroke cycle diesel engines require forced induction just to scavenge properly - or they will not run at all. GM's Detroit Diesel 2-stroke engines all use a Roots-type blower to accomplish this task.

In the case of Electromotive Diesels (EMD's) 2-stroke diesel railroad V-type locomotive engines, (formerly a division of GM), which I'm more familiar with than the truck engines, they also use a Roots-type blower for scavenging purposes. So equipped, they are considered normally aspirated or non-supercharged (the R-B is not a supercharger but a positive displacement pump) since they don't add HP to the engine but simply permit it to run. These engines are also available with a single turbocharger fitted (in addition to the R-B) in which case extra power is available due to the turbo and they are properly referred to as turbo engines.

I don't know how you would classify the engine shown here but it seems to have an unnecessary amount of complexity to achieve its power output. In any case it's an interesting engineering excercise.

A diesel is controlled from fuel intake and not air intake like a gasoline engine. On a stock series 71 detroit diesel they have a flapper door to kill the intake air coming in, just in case something goes wrong with the mechanical injection pump and/or governer. The detroit 2-stroke diesels can do what they call run-away if something goes wrong with the fuel system, and you cant stop it if it gets to far. If it gets out of control you have to close the flapper door to kill the air intake, if that does not work, cut the fuel supply, if that does not work then "run-away". If the engine gets to the point of no return and you cut the air and fuel supply, it will be runnung on its own engine oil that it is sucking past the rings until it blows itself up, rather catastrophically I hear, and it all happens rather quickly, so you have to act fast if it starts to go. So long story short, my guess is that is the purpose of those 3 big butterflies in the intake of each blower.

Oh, I never thought you were. Besides you added useful, interesting information to the way these engines operate. It's a fascinating subject.
