Beyond distraught...work related

Copied this from my earlier post about the situation

"Well found out via facebook that the company I worked for downsized their Canadian office from 30 people down to around 5...and I wasn't one to survive the downsizing "because I haven't been there in so long" as per my boss, who I told I would be gone for minimum 1 year because of my medical thing now wtf do I do...this wasn't part of my plan!!!!

Looks like my move back to London is delayed permanently...going back to that job was 60% of the reason I was moving back, no hassle with finding new employment, no probationary time, no extra stress, and work with the same awesome people I did before.

Feb 22nd.

So I went to bed (well tried to) with this on my mind, only to wake up to this letter from corporate saying I've abandoned my employer, have not provided sufficient documentation, been ignoring their attempts at contacting me, AND they fired me as of Oct 9th!

WTF! I've been on sick leave since August and the only letters I've received is my T4 slip for taxes, and this nasty note from corporate!

So I called "work" today, to find my boss isn't there, so I asked if the people let go had received severance pay...and they all did! I asked if I was entitled to any, and was asked if this corporate letter had any notes of it, which it doesn't,

oh I will be making the company aware I'm not happy, and I want answers and a resolution. I just can't believe no one even tried to call me either, my phone number was the only thing NOT to change from me moving home...Even gave my new contact info to my boss personally, because I didn't want it getting lost or not entered into the system...so much for that.

I know, I was talking to a friend from work too, he found it quite odd that I was able to get my tax info and this nasty letter, but all their attempts to contact me were n/a, never showed up. Hell I even have voicemail on my cell, and no msgs since I left...been to visit twice since then as well! Mind you that was about 2 months ago...but still

i worked for a company where the owner was screwin me outta money and then decided when i quit didnt wanna give me my last pay check so the uniforms he was payin for i told him he will get his uniforms when i get my money you know theres something fishy when they havent contacted you theres numerous ways of getting a hold of you

The company I work(ed) for is a legit company too, which surprises me even more to think they can act this unprofessional towards someone who's on sick leave. I could see if it was someone who just skipped out of work and never came back...but I had documentation and permission to take this leave.

thanks dude, so my boss messaged me back on facebook about what I sent yesterday, which was nothing to do with this corporate letter and severance pay. So I sent another message back about the letter now...so I'll see what she says. I bet I'll just have to contact corporate about this ****...

Yep, gotta call the boss lady tomorrow. She was quick to reply lol

"Ok. Sounds fair. I'll talk to you then. But I tried to contact you about a month ago by phone. I certainly hope it was the right number but I left a message for you. I didn't hear back so the information about no contact specifically with respect to your leave of absence was from me. I was asked to contact you to see if you were returning.

But we can definitely talk more about that tomorrow. Probably best to have a real conversation instead of trying to answer questions through Facebook."

your out on comp still right? they cant do that in the us, didnt know canada gets away with it tho... talk to your comp lawyer.... get one if you dont have one, youll be suprised how fast things happen...

It's not comp, it's just sick leave. Work didn't cover any of my leave, it was all government related, which sucked large because it was only for 15 weeks.

So I've been trying to get on welfare right now, which is kind of the same thing I was on, but just for a longer period of time. Couldn't apply to this til after the sick leave was over, which I had to do in order to apply for welfare...pretty lame eh?

They fired retroactively? Are they coming after you for money or denying insurance?

I can't say the companies name, but a company I worked as a manager for had lost a big contract and they knew this 2 months before they told anyone. They instructed all of the managers to start firing people for things from a very specific list of reasons.. all of which made them excempt from getting unemployment from the company and voided their severance pay.

Just goes to show who pays the price when the economy slumps, its not the big guys, its all of us.
