      Back in the day when I used to do detailing was the time when most Japanese cars actually came from Japan. To survive the long ocean crossing most cars were coated with a waxy substance called cosmoline (it's still used in storing military hardware since it largely prevents rust). Problem is that it's a real pain to get off so you need strong solvents to take it off. We used to use Varsol to get it off...just spray it all over the car and engine compartment then rinse it off.

      On used cars we used to clean the engine bay then spray everything with clear lacquer to make it look new....EVERYTHING.
