cosmoline is really thick, almost like tree sap.
Vasoline could be a problem if you forget about it and casually lean against the car, stylin', trying to impress some females (slip, aah!, splat!)

Cleaning out the garage huh? I had to do the same thing to my garage, it sucks cause my driveway is on a angle and both of my cars arent running. Well at least I got my exercise for the day!

Once the powerwasher comes out, it looks brand new. I might try something like this on my 323 for next winter.

On similar note Jack, I had a friend used to take out all the upholstery, then everywhere inside and out he just brushed oil on with a paintbrush. Then he
waxed the outside with paste wax and didn't buff it off. Oh his car looked like crap all winter, after winter he cleaned it all up, but they sure as hell didn't rust. The oil bit was before governments got all hairy about the environment.

I read somewhere that petroleum jelly eats rubber. is that true?

no, but it will actually remove moisture from the rubber making the rubber more brittle over time. You want to look for solutions ment to lubricate rubber.
