Some Pics of the GTR's Progress

Well, she's been down for some time and will probably still be down for a little while longer, but I've been gathering parts and slowly repairing/rebuilding/upgrading her. Anyway here are some pics......

WRX Hood Scoop, JDM Headlights and Corners, GTX Bumper and Grill

Passenger Side With EGT Sideskirts (Hub assembly is apart due to GTR brake conversion)

Drivers Side View With EGT Sideskirts ( I have a new driver door to replace damaged one in picture)

    EDM 323 Foglight Trunk Garnish

And here is my dad's 1991 Protege LX with 180K miles that he bought new in 91.....

And for the last photo, besides my mom having an 03 MPV LX, even my dog is into Mazdas....

Well to be honest, the reason I've been in hiding for a while is due to the fact that my pro hasn't moved in about 2-3 years. A few months after I installed the GTR, the oil inlet seal went bad and so I got stuck without an engine at that point (couldn't afford a new turbo, couldn't find someone to rebuild the VJ23 and BP's are hard to find around here i nthe junkyard). Well, I needed a car to get around so I started driving the 78 corolla wagon that I have now and put the pro on the side. Gradually I started working on the corolla and kinda forgot about my pro until 1 day after driving the white LX on a nice twisty road, I got motived and out of nowhere starting gathering and installing parts on the pro again. Here's how she sits as of today....

      Stock BP
      Missing downpipe/flex pipe exhaust section
install new rear motor mount with urethane insert
      install axles
drain gas tank of old gas
      bleed clutch
install new brake pads and rotors

However, just because the oil seal went bad on the VJ23 doesn't mean I'm giving up. I already contacted corksport and got a quote on getting it repaired/upgraded so my pro can have the heart it deserves again. So yeah, all in all I guess you can say the car has been to hell and back but at least this time it's gonna be here to stay since everything is being down to bare bones and being redone the right way with the right tools and equipment and I'm taking my time so it comes out right.

As sad as it is that I let it sit like that, there were lots of factors playing into it.
      1) Got layed off from my job (lack of money to finish car)
      2) All my friends sold their turbo cars and started getting married so I lost all my wrenching buddies
      3) DOHC Pros are hard to find in the yards around here (especially the same color as mine so it took time)
      4) Took time to find new junkyards that are a great help with parts for me (Pro LX M/T, EGT M/T, MX-3 GS, FC RX-7's, Millenias, 929's, 626's, heck, even a Mercury Capri...

It's good to hear you're getting back in the game and I know how life always has a funny way of changing our plans.

Where did the seal go bad, inside the turbo itself? My old VJ23 was leaking a bit of oil so I replaced it with a newer one imported from Japan but the old one still works and I am keeping it as a spare.

How come the motor went with that bad seal?

Keep us posted with your work ... I've always liked your car.

Honestly, I don't know what seal went bad, all I know if there was a ton of oil in the intercooler and piping when I pulled everything apart so I assumed it was the oil inlet seal. The car started pouring smoke out of the exhaust after I started it up on day to the point that it made the car look like it was on fire. Anyway, I checked the shaft anf there is no play and no bent fins and the engine itself is still good, it's just that turbo problem.

Wow, i never knew your car was parked. Glad to see she's showing signs of progress.

So with Corksports repair/upgrade what all might they do to the turbo? That'd be a crazy turbo if started flowing some more CFM.

Here's the email I received from Corksport about my GTR when I asked them about repairing my VJ23.

"We can rebuild the turbocharger as long as there is no main shaft damage. The last overhaul we did was $472 for a VJ-23. We can also put a larger compressor wheel in the turbo for an additional $195 if you want a bit more airflow.

If the turbo is shot there are not alot of options. You could see if you can find a subie IHI turbo which has the same size exhaust wheel and see if you can use the cartridge from it to assemble a turbo that way."

                  Thanks

I got the same quote from Corksport about the rebuild but I had no idea about the larger wheel that can go in there. Any specs they gave on that?
